There is a A lot of high profile people who are mucking around with Ubuntu these days. Latest to (almost) join their ranks is Engadget founder Peter Rojas. Peter is a good friend, and has been our personal consumer tech/gadget trend spotter. He has a pretty solid track record of making the right picks, and can astutely tell, what will sell and what won’t.
Rojas recently installed Ubuntu on his Sony Vaio F5 and seems to be pretty happy, though not quite ready to make the switch. In other words, give it a few months, and Ubuntu might actually start to get serious traction.
….my new Ubuntu PC runs Firefox like a charm. Now that I’ve migrated my email to Gmail, my calendar to Google Calendar, and my to-do list to Backpack, all I really care about on a device is how good its browser is.
Ubuntu is not the only Linux Rojas is mucking around with. On a recent trip to Europe, he left his laptop at home, and instead took Nokia 770 hoping to lighten the load. He missed the keyboard. (Bluetooth keyboard works great with it, Peter.) He says if Nokia could add a slider keyboard, Nokia 770 could be a huge hit. Why? because the browser is great!
Bottomline is that if we continue to get reliable webservices, the focus will shift from the device to the browser. It is a good argument, if you believe that era of seamless connectivity is (almost) upon us.

oops… lack of caffeine and nicotine is having an adverse impact. I am taking a break now. getting loaded on both, and then getting back to blogging.
“era of seamless connectivity is (almost) upon us.” that applies to the states and a few other countries. in general we’re far behind from that dream. maybe wimax help towards the everything connected dream.

I took my Nokia 770 to PyCon 2006 as a laptop replacement. It wasn’t as efficient at taking notes (I, too, missed a keyboard, but I’d want a larger bluetooth model, NOT a thumboard), but it definitely got the job done. And with more fun – I encountered a lot of techenvy over it’s small size and gorgeous display, and even provided one peson with a map to the local Fry’s so he could buy his own.
A keyboard is definitely on my Christmas list… 🙂
