What’s Half of Nothing?

Camera reviews are not only pointless, but are also kind of rigged. And there is no better testimonial for this camera hype machine than the “review” of Fuji X half camera by PetaPixel. Fuji X half camera is a camera that has vertical optical viewfinder and a vertical rear LCD. It has an 18-megapixel one-inch sensor, an equivalent of 32mm lens, and uses a 3:4 aspect ratio.

The camera might be a nod to the TikTok-ing of visual culture, but it is as style over substance as you can get. Yes, Fuji is trying hard to experiment with form factors and leaning in on its film heritage. And yes, that’s a good thing. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean it is beneficial. I know it is hard to convince many, but from my perspective, I only expect camera phones to become even more powerful. I will let a real camera guru

Fuji Delight

A few days ago my friend Felix let me use one of his Fuji cameras. It has been a while since I owned an xPro2 and forgot how much I love that form factor. I don’t much care for the Fuji rendition of raw files – not sure why, but I prefer my SL and its muted DNG files.

But, back to Fuji — I am just impressed how much complexity they have packed into their cameras and made a menu that is human understandable versus Sony. That said, you will take my SL from my cold dead hands. I believe love is forever – even when you have shortcomings that annoy the hell out of you — in partners and in cameras, or vice versa.

Have a beautiful week of great photos and enjoying the slow wind down of summer.

Iceland: The Frozen Exposures

One of the best parts of this trip to Iceland was that I spent an inordinate amount of time doing long exposures, both on my Fuji xPro2 and Leica M-Monochrome. I used the Lee Filters on Fuji and B&W ND filters of various types on my Leica. The results were quite different on each.

The lake in the north of the country was about a mile and a half from where I was staying and as a result was a popular spot for me to try and make some long exposures. This was made with Fuji xPro2 and their 16mm lens. 11 seconds exposure at f16 with ISO 200. (Above)

Mother & baby seal — this iceberg reminded me of them so named my #5 in the long exposure series just that. It was quite fun to make this photo as this place was packed with tourists and really rude photographers who
