A rainy day (photo) walk

We photographers are an odd bunch. When the weather is bad, we decide to leave our dwellings and go out in search of photos. Last week, after hiding in my cave for over a week, a rainy day allowed me to put the underused Leica M10 Monochrome to work. It was a chance for me to clock some much-needed steps — and much-needed visual exercise.

Even though I am primarily a landscape photographer, I have been trying to translate my approach to landscapes to urbanscapes. Creating images that capture silence or reinforce the need for silence is much harder on busy city streets. Rainy days and foggy mornings make everything easier.

I went out for a photo walk with Chris Michel. We started at our new favorite espresso joint and then made our way towards the Embarcadero. There were only a few people to be seen anywhere — not that

Some landscapes from around town

San Francisco and its geography make it easy to capture landscapes. Sometimes it is the beach, and other times it is just a pier in my neighborhood. I have been in a self-imposed quarantine and as a result, I leave home early in the morning for a walk. Sometimes I go to the beach, in the evening, but mostly it means a chance to encounter some good light, which usually results in the kind of photos I like.

Lately, I have been carrying around the Sigma fp camera with the f2.8/45mm kit lens. It is an L-mount camera and I am going to do a longer review once I have finished putting it through the paces. But for now, enjoy the images.

DeYoung Delight

Over the long Labor Day weekend, I visited DeYoung museum along with my good friend Chris Michel to look at their vast collection of artworks. And eventually I ended up making some photos of the building, whose edges and angles are always inviting from the perspective of a photographer. I sincerely wished I had a wider lens than my 50mm Summicron. Lesson learned, and I will be heading back one of these days again.
