What’s the Truth?

These are dangerous days.
To say what you feel is to dig your own grave.

Sinead O'Connor/Black Boys on Mopeds

Maybe it the general state of the world (as viewed through the lens of news and social media) made me feel a little less hopeful this morning.

Maybe it is a realization that very few people have convictions they live by and are willing to sacrifice everything for them.

Maybe Sinead O’Connor’s death has made a gloomy day a bit more dire.

Maybe it so happens that I am a little bit closer to her age. I feel the reality of mortality all too viscerally.

Maybe it is a growing realization that we are all slowly slinking into a quicksand of misinformation.

Maybe it is just that deep in my heart, I have started to feel that fighting this onslaught on humanness is a Sisyphean task.

Maybe it is just the truth is just too true.

They want cartoons, not truth. Because most people can’t handle the truth. And the truth is life is now so hard that people don’t want to be reminded of the fact that there is no upside, that they’re stuck. Which is why people believe in falsehoods, conspiracy theories, because the truth is just too scary.

  1. so often, i just feel so in tune with how you see and process world events and how technology is changing–not always for the better…i am feeling my age, too, brother–and it gives me the advantage of some perspective, but as you say, it also sometimes makes me feel vulnerable…
