Jeff Weiner, the Next Disney CEO?

LinkedIn SF. Captured by me on the iPhone X

Jeff Weiner gave up his job as the chief executive of LinkedIn, a Microsoft company, earlier this week. He will occupy the office of the executive chairman. I have known Jeff in a professional capacity for a while — he was the guy leading some interesting changes at Yahoo, back when Yahoo was a thing. As someone who came to Silicon Valley after a stint at Warner Brothers (Online) and was part of former Yahoo CEO Terry Semel’s coterie, it would be an understatement to label him an overachiever. His career is a curve that moves up and to the right.

Bernie’s Day

About eight years ago, I woke up from my surgery, groggy and hazy. The beeps from machines sounded distant. The voices from the corridor outside the small private section of the intensive care unit at the UCSF were muted. I could hear the heavy rain against the window. I was thirsty. And yet all I can remember seeing a much younger President Obama declare victory in Iowa, though I couldn’t hear a single thing he said or even make out the screen clearly. I fell asleep again. I wouldn’t wake up for a while again, but I was sleeping with the idea that America could have a black president, one many thought didn’t have a chance to make it to the White House.

Yesterday, I was lying in bed, body aching, throat hurting and fever above the century point, watching Bernie Sanders make his speech – dignified and very clear

LinkedIn & Zynga & a tale of two hired guns

Sean Gourley, who cofounded Quid is one of my favorite people and we often catch up for a coffee and an unstructured conversations about virtually  anything, though often it is about data and its role in our contemporary lives. Yesterday, however we met to commiserate about the respective spankings our cricket teams received at the hands of Australia— he is a Kiwi. Both our teams had over achieved in the 2015 Cricket World Cup, and most of it was due to successful leadership and a clear and precise game plan.

New Zealand were all passion and aggression. India was logic and utilization of resources that are long on reputation but short on real world performance. This lead to our conversation meandering into the issues of management. We have both had our fair share of experiences and observations on this topic. There isn’t a shortage of management advice out there. And
