Twitter’s Growth & The Diminishing Utility of @Replies

Being one of the first people outside of Twitter family to sign-up for Twitter, I was lucky enough to get a short two-letter handle: @om. As the service has gain popularity, it has become obvious that the short handle has its own set of shortcomings — especially now that there hundreds of millions of people using Twitter around the world.

It is becoming difficult to separate signal from noise, especially when it comes to the “@ reply” feature. Here is an example! I get pinged for no reason. 🙂 If you have suggestions, I am all ears.

Update: @jess says that I can do a to:om search and save it and it will only show the @replies sent directly to me. It is working for now. Thanks @jess.

What Twitter & Broadband Internet Mean To Me.

Earlier this month I spoke with German Radio Journalist Marcus Schuler about the impact of ultra band (50 megabits and even higher speed connections) on our Internet experience and the emergence of the real time web. Twitter is just the beginning of this real-time internet – the simplest manifestation of this long term trend – that spells the end of communications and start of an interaction society. Schuler put up the video of the interview on his blog. Have a look!
