My Creative Process [Podcast]

In part two of my podcast with Maykel Loomans, we discussed my creative process and the reasons behind my approach to photography.

We talked about some of the challenges we all encounter in the creative process and what he looks for when making photographs. I was especially inspired by Om’s approach to thinking about creative inputs vs. creative outputs. We spoke about dealing with procrastination. And of course there are some hot takes about camera’s and camera systems.

In part one of the podcast, we discussed the current state of technology from both of our perspectives, and my thoughts on the future technology trends.

I was on FullStackWhatever Podcast.

Former Facebooker and designer Maykel Loomans interviewed me for his podcast, Full Stack Whatever. In Part 1 of the podcast, we talked about the evolution of technology and the internet from its early days to now. We chatted about how it has moved from connecting information to connecting people to connecting machines.

We talked about the coming era of social discontinuity, where people (especially young people) will retreat into more isolated spaces online due to the high judgment and cost of interacting openly on today’s social platforms. We ended up talking at length about technology media, the need for optimism, and my journey. If you have some time, please take a listen.

For kids, Social Media is kaput.

One of the biggest problems with old people is that they forget that they were young once, or that they were easily bored and did things that annoyed their parents, or that they had their own creative ways to deal with boredom and wasting time. And that is why I am a bit sanguine about how the young and the restless use the Internet and social media.

A letter from Om. Issue #13/2023

Hi! I am Om & this is my letter where I share what’s on my mind, my latest writings, articles worth reading from around the web, my recommendations & some of my photography.

In this issue, I address:

What I am up to?

It has been awfully silent around here for a simple reason: I was away for almost three weeks on a photography trip and was mostly offline. I first traveled by boat in Greenland and later ventured into the highlands of Iceland. Then I went to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, to see the glory of Autumn. And when I got back, well, the virus got me.

While these trips were educational and interesting, they didn’t yield any remarkable photos. However, they clarified something essential for

Social Internet Is Dead. Get Over It.

The social-media Web as we knew it, a place where we consumed the posts of our fellow-humans and posted in return, appears to be over.…In large part, this is because a handful of giant social networks have taken over the open space of the Internet, centralizing and homogenizing our experiences through their own opaque and shifting content-sorting systems.

Algorithms optimized for engagement shape what we see on social media and can goad us into participation by showing us things that are likely to provoke strong emotional responses. But although we know that all of this is happening in aggregate, it’s hard to know specifically how large technology companies exert their influence over our lives.

Threads, Twitter, & Social Photos

It has been a few months since Mark Zuckerberg & Co. decided to launch a direct attack on Elon Musk and the anti-social network formerly known as Twitter. Threads, which was bootstrapped off Instagram’s social graph, became one of the fastest-growing consumer Internet services, though things have cooled a bit there.

“A problem becomes a crisis when it challenges our ability to cope and thus threatens our identity. In the polycrisis the shocks are disparate, but they interact so that the whole is even more overwhelming than the sum of the parts. At times one feels as if one is losing one’s sense of reality.”

The Land of Imperfect Data.

The technology press is once again in an uproar over half-truths and incendiary comments by Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter. He indicated that he’s going to remove the “block” feature from Twitter (formerly known as X) and instead will force users to opt for “mute.”

The bigger question is: why would Twitter undertake such a move? I suspect the service’s traffic and engagement are declining. In theory, the end of blocking should lead to more engagement in timelines, but I’m not so sure. Most of the accounts I’ve blocked are spambots, known trolls, and other unwanted online entities. I don’t really have any desire to engage with them. So, ending the “blocking” feature is kind of counterproductive and reduces my Twitter usage.

Still, it will help create a false impression of growth and usage on Twitter. The platform has been on a decline since Musk took over in the
