Trickbaby photo by Elise Dumontet small.jpgTrickBaby, a UK-based band and its lead vocalist, Saira Hussain tricked us into thinking that they were not funny. But it all changed when we caught up with her following the announcement of a three-album deal with EMI.

Trickbaby will be MTV Alert’s featured artist of the month in October and the album will be released throughout the Far East in January, preceded by the single Nine Parts Of Desire, which is already making waves in India.

In the UK the Trickbaby have just completed a video to Slipping Through Your Fingers using members of the Great Britain synchronised swimming team, expect to see it on a screen near you very soon. They will be playing at Cargo in Shoreditch on Thursday 23rd October and forthcoming is their eagerly awaited Duran Duran Wild Boys remix.

Here are excerpts from an interview…

NRI/TT: Tell us about yourself
YBA (Young Brit Asian), GSOH (good sense of humour)

NRI/TT: How did you get into music?
I was into music when I was still in my momma’s belly – but I got into making sounds when I hooked up with the rest of the Trickbabies – a bunch of like-minded, spirited individuals that all dance to the same beat if you know what I mean. Rumour has it we all met at a Deepak Chopra convention in Tallahassee – believe that at your peril!

NRI/TT: Who are your musical influences?
From Nusrat to the Neptunes, Noor Jehan to Norah Jones, Quawalii to Bob Marley

Trickbaby 2 photo by Elise Dumontet small.jpgNRI/TT: Tell us a little about the genesis of this album in specific and your music in general
The album was born of many chai, samosa sessions in Steve’s studio. It’s born of our Britishness and our Asianess. It’s all about the beat, the vibe, the spirit, the soul……

NRI/TT: So what’s next? Are you touring or going on a promotional tour.
Yes we hope to have the whole planet covered by 2004, not really – it would be great to do Asia and America – hopefully the deal we’ve just got with EMI will make that a reality as our stuff has never been available in those territories. The album comes out in the Far East in January so there are plans to make a video in Singapore to Nine Parts Of Desire in November and then tour throughout the region early next year. We?re all looking forward to playing in India. We?ve just finished making the video to Slipping Through Your Fingers (we used some of Great Britain?s synchronised swimming team) so are about to start promo for that over here ? no tour, just occasional gigs at the moment, to keep us fit!
