Akismet, the wonderful plug-in developed by AutoMATTic, was working nicely till a couple of days ago. But now I am getting hit by comment spam again, and despite all the efforts, it doesn’t seem to be ending. I think the problem might circle back to the Akismet for MT, which seems to be taxing Akismet servers. Now WordPress users are paying the price. This continues for one more day – I am going to have to go to registrations and what not!

Yeah I’m seeing the same thing OM. Previously I was getting maybe 2/3 comments to moderate a week, just today I’ve got 20.
I can assure you Akismet for MT has nothing to do with it. The amount of spam we’ve gotten the past week or so has been pretty constant, about 240k a day, but issues related to the WP.com problem yesterday caused trouble for Akismet today. We are, of course, taking steps to ensure this problem won’t happen again, and are continually rolling out additional resources for all our web services.
As an alternative, should it come to that, have a look at the Spam Karma 2 plugin: http://unknowngenius.com/blog/wordpress/spam-karma/
Akismet is certainly easier to work with, but SK2 is pretty darned effective as well.
And heck, since I’m sharining links, Bad Behavior coupled with EITHER of those 2 really cuts back the volumes: http://www.ioerror.us/software/bad-behavior/
Cheers!
Om,
I’m using the “Spam Karma 2” plugin and it is great. since I started to use it i did not encounter even one mistake which is pretty impressive.
I can also confirm a spike in unfiltered spam during the last week. It’s still better than nothing, but obviously there are times when it isn’t foolproof for whatever reasons. Manually filtering words like Cialias, Phentermine, Casino, etc have caught most of the ones Akismet has missed.
Yep, we noticed similar across the network and other sites we support. It was like suddenly the gates were thrown wide open for a day or two there.
