Matt Marshall is leaving San Jose Mercury News, and joining the ranks of journalists-turned-bloggers, and taking control of his destiny. He will be writing VentureBeat, a new blog that will track the venture capital industry. Matt, as you know had been writing Silicon Beat for a couple of years now, and has garnered a solid following amongst technology insiders. He calls VentureBeat, an encore to SiliconBeat. I think the encore is going to be better.
VentureBeat’s mission is to provide news and information about private companies and the venture capital that fuels them. People are at the heart of this project. VentureBeat will be a resource for entrepreneurs and other interested professionals facing some the biggest decisions of their careers. VentureBeat will focus initially on Silicon Valley, and gradually, when possible, expand to cover innovation hubs around the globe.
I called Matt a few minutes before he was ready to launch, and he sounded rightfully stressed. “This is just a boot strap model,” he told me, and pointed out that he is syndicating the content of his site to his ex-employer, San Jose Mercury News. You can read all about it here, on VentureBeat. Good luck Matt, and we are all rooting for you!
Nice launch, the site has been down all day. Whoops!
I think Om Malik, Michael Arrington, Matt Marshall, Rafat Ali, Tom Foremski, John Furrier, Robert Scoble and Danny Sullivan should work together. Make an alliance. Coordinate your efforts. Build the next media empire.

I hope mike does not continue to be the official PR for Google, KP and Sequoia. It’s getting old Mike. There are so many great companies out there so let’s try talking about them too. All the best.
It’s too bad about the site still being down. We’re trying to get them on WP.com so they never have to worry about traffic again, but it has some custom stuff that may make it tricky.
