According to data from Net Applications, Internet Explorer owned a stunning 89% of the browser market in 2005, the year WebKit was open sourced. Today that figure’s dropped to a comparatively unimpressive 54%. In contrast, Safari — the only WebKit-based browser in existence in 2005 — had measly 1.7% marketshare. Today though, WebKit-based browsers account for almost 20%.
