Andrew Hyde, a post social vagabond and a coder released a new service today called 15 things. The concept behind the service is simple – list 15 things you would carry when you are on the road. It is a great little concept that forces you to think what is important to you and why. I have always maintained that you should be able to pack your life in a single suitcase and this idea is not very different from that concept. Though the suitcase gives one the capacity to pack up to about 30 things.
I created my list but didn’t include basics such as socks, toiletries and underwear. I also didn’t include my medications. But frankly I could live in those 15 things for a long time. I did when I was traveling in Berlin, Munich, Paris and Delhi over past few months.
If I would miss anything – my nice outerwear cashmere coat and a few sweaters — otherwise life doesn’t have to be that complicated.
Here is my list by the way.
I tend to over-pack. So I need to really think about my 15 things. Maybe this exercise will teach me how to only carry the essentials and be okay with it.
We’ve recently moved back to our “starter” home and thought it so much smaller than I remembered. I believe it’s healthy to go through this type of purge every now and then. We’ve (at least I’ve) committed to not getting a storage unit. Stuff and figuring out how to keep stuff really does complicate your life.
