Jason Kottke, one of the blog elders and author of Kottke.org, celebrated Dave Winer’s 30th blog anniversary by calling him “one of the purest of the pure bloggers.” To that, Dave asked Jason what he meant by “pure blogger.” I don’t know what Jason means, but as I pointed out in a comment, “Blogging is an individual and, I would say, selfish act — you do it because it is what you want to do for you.” Pure blogging is “blogging” because you have something to say. To me, that ability is what makes you a pure blogger. Any other explanation of blogging “is just the traditional idea of media,” meant for an audience and reach.

We need a term for blogging when you have nothing to say but can’t stop yourself… been searching for that for 20 odd years…
I call it journaling 🙂
It seems to me if you write you must have something to say. And that has value.
They are two sides of the same coin. Aren’t they? 😜
That term is “tweet”
I’m happy to call it “blogging” all the other stuff for reach and reads and audience is self-promotion. Dave Winer’s original framing of blogging as “the unedited voice of a single person” always works. For me it’s those times where something rattles around my head and I cannot stand to not write, pushing aside all tasks and duties til it’s out.
Alan,
That is as succinct as one can get. Well said.
