The eyeball-based business model has a new game – massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG.)
Acclaim Games says that its new massively multiplayer game, 2Moons, is going to be totally free and will be purely ad supported. The M-rated role playing game with the tagline, “No mercy for the weak, no pity for the dying, no tears for the slain,” has got the 15-to-30 demographic right in its cross hair, and could attract some serious advertising dollars. 2Moons is based upon a successful MMO called Dekaron in Korea, and is being directed by David Perry, who is one of the legends of the gaming industry.
If this ad-based model actually works that there is a good chance it could put some serious pressure on the subscription based online games. As an aside, Acclaim Games is an old name – the original company went belly up, and former Activision executive Howard Marks bought it for $100,000 and has revived the brand.
I’d be interested to see how well this performs in terms of generating revenue, although they could make a better start by not putting a barrier between me and the site by asking me to install IE5, and manage to create Flash detection that actually worked.
BTW, the next article link for this page points back to this article – is that supposed to happen?
Sounds interesting, till you view their “site”, and I use the term loosely, but then I didn’t go for the IE5 experience, I used a real browser. Will keep an ear to the ground for future developments, but a word of advice to the developers, we the consumer judge you on initial contact and yours needs work, seriously.
What? You dont have to use IE5… I used firefox and the site works fine.
Firefox kicks ass anyways.
