Compete, the web research company, has come up with some interesting findings about location-based services and their use among smartphone users. According to a survey of 1,000 such people:
- 1 in 3 currently use a LBS at least once a month.
- Smartphone owners who use LBS are likely to spend more each month on their total wireless bill, in some cases more than $125 a month.
- Weather, navigation and store locations are among most used location-based services. These are pretty mundane applications but they’re clearly getting a lot of traction.
As we have noted in the past, the emergence of the iPhone (s aapl) has boosted interest in LBS. BlackBerry (s rimm) and Android (s goog), meanwhile, are helping grow the total number of LBS-enabled mobile applications.
Location-based mobile integrated with digital signage is expected to be standard on 40% of digital-out-of-home screens by 2012.
