Breaking Bad’s new season must have had a massive opening day — it was all everyone was talking about on Twitter and it was one of the top searches on Google. A quick search of “breaking bad” on Topsy, a data analytics company, shows a big spike in tweets about the show. A recent report from Nielsen Research showed that there is a correlation between Twitter activity and TV viewership. In other words, Twitter drives people to tune in to the shows (and ratings cause people to tweet more.) For some of us, as my colleague Janko Roettgers recently pointed out that television is the second screen and the Twitter-TV correlation is pretty obvious.
OK, Om, so you’ve gone out on a limb here and directly tied a big cable rating for “Breaking Bad” (5.9 million viewers on Sunday) to a lot of people talking about the show on Twitter. But I think the “correlation” is a little more complicated than that. “NCIS” averaged an audience nearly four times as big last season on CBS. I wonder if “NCIS” even show up on Topsy. I’d check that for you, but I’m off the clock 🙂
