The WSJ reports that Comcast is planning a national rollout of VoIP by year-end 2006. It joins the likes of AT&T and Vonage and will begin testing the service in three markets this year. It expects to offer the service to half of households passed by the end of ’05 and to 40M households by year-end ’06. Now this is good use of Comcast’s natural abilities which is running a cable network and maximizing the returns on the coaxial. Given how quickly Comcast became a major player in the high-speed Internet business, I think they will be a major player in the VoIP market as well. Makes their bundle more attractive, especially if they can lick their customer service problems. On another note, I am quite certain the company will resort to cheap tricks to keep rival VoIP providers off its networks.
