Almost a year ago, I predicted that Facebook Connect — essentially a single web identity that allows users to sign into sites that support Connect — would be the most important reason why Facebook would dominate the world of social networks. And that is precisely what has happened. Thanks to the growing popularity of its Connect feature, Facebook is now bigger than MySpace in the U.S., according to Hitwise, a research company that tracks web traffic trends.
For the week ending Sept. 5, Facebook captured nearly 58 percent of visits in the social-networking category, followed by MySpace with 31 percent, Hitwise says. (Related Posts: “Why Facebook Connect Matters & Why It will Win” and “Social Web’s Big Question: Federate or Aggregate“)
Facebook is definitely became bigger than Myspace in the past year, but where’s the proof that Connect is indeed the determining factor, and not say organic-growth/fb-apps/fb-mobile?
You state “Thanks to the growing popularity of its Connect feature…” but leave out something to support the claim.
Facebook Connect is becoming the de facto standard for our identity online, they are set to own the mobile space as well. What concerns me is the amount of personal data we are allowing the social network to control! x
Facebook Connect isn’t the reason people are using Facebook or FB is experiencing growth. Facebook is a better experience than MySpace. Myspace is a hack full of spammers and clicks everywhere, just so they can squeeze one more page view.
I totally agree with Jason.
Myspace is just butt ugly and unsafe. Om, you should have been using both of these sites a few years ago; then you would have predicted the demise of myspace and the rise of facebook for the correct reason while myspace was on its growth path.
So many “middle and upscale” users predicted this that I don’t know how you could NOT see this.
Good Improvement!Facebook definitely become bigger than Myspace nowadays. Facebook Connect is becoming the de facto standard for our identity online, they are also kept their legs in the mobile space as well. The interesting fact is Facebook has a single web identity which allows users to sign into sites easily and make them to share their data easily. Myspace is a hack full of spammers and clicks everywhere but Faccebook with their renowned identity crushes them easily!
Seconding the calls for proof of causation.
