Herndon Town Council approved by 6-to-0 vote that Verizon can start selling cable television. Verizon got a 15-year cable franchise for the city. This is the first anywhere in the country. The 22,000 person town is going to have another option in addition to Cox that has a monopoly cable franchise for the city. Will more dominoes fall? How will city be compensated for this? The Washington Post story doesn’t answer those questions. In a press release Verizon says it will introduce Verizon Fios TV in parts of North Texas later this year as well, along with some other communities in California and Florida. The upside of it all, I hope is that consumers will finally have to pay less to watch all that crap on TV.
