After we reported the Google problems yesterday, David Krane of Google, pointed out that the outage was for about 15 minutes or so. Given that the company had sales of $1.256 billion in the previous quarter, or about $581,481 an hour, apparently the company lost about $145,370 as a result of the outage. Some folks reported that Google and its service were unavailable to them for a longer stretch of time, it is still hard to estimate how much this cost the company.
But since it was a DNS issue, not all of Google’s visitors were out of luck. There are lots of DNS servers and lots of people surely had the info cached. It was a headache for sure, but not a complete outage. But what a boon for the other *.com.net search engine owner!
Is it just me or did this actually happen on Friday, as well? I was at a client’s site, so I didn’t have time to investigate thoroughly, but I noticed the exact same behaviour.
Not sure about the friday night part chris. sorry. others might know better.
