South Korean handset makers are cleaning up when it comes to 3G. Samsung and LG are two of the leading makers of handsets that can handle high speed wireless networks, offering more variety than Nokia, Motorola or any of the Japanese handset makers. They are leveraging their domestic market place – EV-DO – and pumping out handsets that are finding favor in Asia, and most importantly US. Verizon, for instance recently introduced two EV-DO handsets – one from Samsung and another from LG. Now there is word that a third Korean handset giant is coming to Verizon. Korea Times reports that Pantech & Curitel has started to provide high-speed handsets based on CDMA2000 1x EV-DO (evolution data only) to Verizon Wireless, the No.2 mobile carrier in the U.S. “We aim to supply 2 million EV-DO phones to the U.S. market this year. It’s worth noting that we’re now exporting EV-DO models back to the homeland of CDMA technologies,” a Pantech spokesman told the South Korean daily. The model, CDM-8940, would be equipped with 1.3-megapixel camera, MP3 player and video-on-demand function and will sell at $300 per unit. The phone is branded as UTStarcom/Audiovox CDM-8940.
