Daniel Taylor believes that spotty coverage in the wireless networks, not just in US but even in more mature markets like Europe is the main reason why mobile connectivity is not guaranteed and that is the main reason why no carrier is ready to commit to a service level agreement (SLA) for mobile data services. And that means, that the enterprise applications will always suffer from high latency and slow response times. These issues might delay the enterprises’ completely embracing the mobile data in near term. Also it reinforces the real value of companies like RIM that are trying to work through these “white spots” in wireless nets.
Absolutely agree, rode the Amtrak from NYC to Albany today with a VZW EV-DO card. No coverage in the west side tunnels of Manhattan, but EV-DO in Westchester part of the way, decent 1xRTT coverage to about Peekskill, and then horrible, spotty coverage until you get close to Albany. A long way to go before you can count on this stuff consistently. Network equipment that can interface to multiple carriers on conveyances, and software to hide that from the user will be essential for some time to come.
