Come April, and Garland, Texas will become the first city with a real high speed wireless mesh network, that will be primarily used for public safety applications, reports the FireChief.

bq. NextGen City of Richardson, Texas, and MeshNetworks of Maitland, Fla., is based on a micro-cellular architecture that places router functionality in every network component, a scheme that creates a self-forming and self-healing network with peer-to-peer networking capabilities.

The system was previously used in Desert Storm, the first Iraq war. It can deliver real-time streaming video, voice-over-IP calls, and data through-put rates reaching 1.5 Mbps in two cars traveling at 60 miles per hour in opposite directions.
