The first quarter 2005 was a torrid one for broadband service providers, according to Leichtman Research Group. Nearly 2.5 million subscribers were added to the total US broadband subscribers during the quarter, bringing the total to 35.8 million. Cable has over 21.1 million broadband subscribers, and DSL has 14.7 million subscribers. Comcast still is the big daddy – 7.4 million subscribers, while SBC is a solid #2 with 5.6 million. During the quarter, cable added 1.19 million new subscribers while DSL added 1.4 million.
“Deeply discounted introductory offers again drove a surge in broadband adoption in the first quarter of 2005,” said Bruce Leichtman, president and principal analyst for Leichtman Research Group, Inc. “In the past six months, nearly five million subscribers have added broadband service in the US.”
