For a company, which prides itself on being a “voice over the net” pioneer, Cisco Systems was surprisingly absent from one of the biggest VoIP shows to date. (Lucent and Alcatel were other absentees) I was not the only one who noted Cisco’s absence despite the fact that the show was held a “stone’s throw from their campus.” (You could almost smell John Chambers’ cologne!) Many VoIP insiders believe that Cisco only gives lip service to the whole concept of VoIP and all they care about is selling more routers. (Good for them, but they should stop pretending!) I heard that the Time Warner Telecom win touted by the company came by discounting VoIP products, just as a way to push routers.
