1. Om! Dude! I love your blog and B2.0 articles but, yo, get ahold of your crazy hyphens (“give-up” ?!) and capitalization (Ruled Notebook; Windows-only Apps) or hire me as official GigaOm editor. 😉

   I realize this is your personal website, but it’s still widely read… and sometimes I have trouble understanding parts of your posts, have to decode the punctuation or sentence construction.

   Posting this comment out of love because this is one of the few tech blogs I enjoy.

2. You think a tablet computer is impressive now? Wait a month or two and your going to see something from apple that will blow your socks off. It’s tablet, but touch-screen, multi-touch points that are instant.

4. Om, we had a similar eureka moment a year ago, and a bunch of us then decided to build an application (a TabletPC/Ink supported) all-in-one digital organizer and planner for students. Tablets are gaining ground, particularly with the student market.

7. You picked a great tablet. I use the X41 Tablet PC as well. I’ve been through quite a number of them over the years, and the X41 is my favorite – mainly due to size and extended battery. Plus, it is just a great tablet.

8. I think clearly, Tablets are light usage devices. I think it is hard to use these devices if you tend to write a lot, like I do. I think in the end, it is niche product, which can be very profitable. I like it so far.

15. Take Tablets for what they are right now…a wonderful accessory to a regular convertible. The only other place Tablet’s work well is in vertical applications, and that’s not terribly newsworthy. I’m sure part of your excitement is the fact that you were using the great X41 as well.

17. Tablets are great, I even used the aenemic transmeta (un)powered compaq model for quite a while because of the form factor. Why can’t we have a smart input/display (wireless of course) that works with all my devices, wether that’s desktop, laptop, MS, Apple, Linux or whatever. Modular computing, divergence of devices.

    You might not have to be on Windows too long. I just abandoned my Tablet to go to the new MacPro and I may get to get a tablet back and stay with Mac–>Check Apple’s latest patents.

23. A touchscreen tablet is the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. How do you rest your hand on it to write? How do you get precise like a pen point with a big fat finger?

    I can assure you of one thing though, no matter how horrible and idiotic a product apple makes, all you apple users will love it.

25. Om, I’ve had the same X41 Tablet since July and I still primarily use my Mac Powerbook. So I agree with you that the Tablet is low use. I have it mostly so that I can run Windows when I need to to test some stuff out. I do find, however, that I really like the Tablet for reading (its screen quality is great) and sometimes marking up PDF documents.

29. Tablet PCs are the future. The Toshiba TecraM4 I’m using runs Maya, ZBrush, Photoshop, Painter8, and Sketchbook beautifully – while letting me paint and texture the way I would on paper. Pretty good VoiceRec allows me to call up tools and menu items easily (although – people look at me funny) and stellar handwriting rec allows for fluid textfield surfing. Its on the heavy side, but the Tecra is flush in the hardware dept. too, so it runs all the latest games (strategy titles are particularily fun in tablet mode). I’ve never bought a Mac, but after seeing that proposed Multitouch slate of theirs…I’ll do it, man.

    역사를 왜곡하는 것은 과연 한국인가, 일본인가

    일본이 역사를 왜곡하고 있다고 생각하는 당연하게 한국인들에게는 ‘사실은 거꾸로일 수도 있다’는 인식을 가지는 것 자체가 매우 힘든 일이다. 일본 내에서도 몇 년 전까지만 해도 과거사에 관한 한 남북한에 사죄해야 한다는 소위 ‘속죄파’가 대세였으나 최근 들어 한국의 역사날조를 고발하는 출판물들이 줄을 이으면서 속죄파는 급속히 줄어들고 있다. 사실 이제 일본에서 속죄파는 소수로 전락했으며 그런 말을 하는 사람들은 시대착오적인 인사로 여겨지고 있는 분위기이다.

    최근 1년간 일본 내에서 이같은 ‘역사날조의 한국’의 인식을 급속하게 퍼뜨린 것이 바로 이 책 <친일파를 위한 변명> 이다. 이 책의 출현으로 인해 일본내에서 역사논쟁은 사실상 종지부를 찍었다고 볼 수 있으며, 앞으로의 한일관계는 이 전과는 매우 달라지게 될 것이라고 말하는 사람도 많다. 저자는 최근 자주 일본을 방문하여 정재계의 실력자들을 접촉하고 있는데, 그가 만난 대부분의 정치가들은 이 책을 숙독하였으며 고이즈미 현 총리를 비롯하여 대부분의 각료들도 이 책으로 인해 인식의 전환을 이루고 있음을 확인하였다.

    최근 자민당 정조회장인 아소 타로씨의 창씨개명과 관련된 발언에 대해서도, 예전 같으면 사죄하고 현직에서 물러나는 것이 당연시되었을 것이나 지금은 야당을 비롯하여 일본 정계의 그 누구도 아소 발언에 대해 그 진위를 문제삼는 인사는 존재하지 않는다. 실제로 아소 발언 사건은 ‘발언의 내용은 진실이지만 한국 대통령의 방문을 앞두고 있는 민감한 시기였다는 터져나왔다는 것이 문제다’는 정도로 정리되었으며 아소씨가 ‘발언의 타이밍’에 대해 사죄한 뒤에는 그 누구도 아소의 퇴진을 요구하지 않고 있다. 즉 이제 일본 사회에서 ‘역사를 날조하는 것은 한국이다’는 인식은 점차 상식으로 굳어져가고 있는 분위기다. 이같은 변화에 따라 아소 타로씨는 이후 총무대신, 외무대신 등으로 영전을 거듭하면서 코이즈미의 후계자로 승승장구하고 있는 것이다.

    이 책은 2002년 2월 한국에서 초판이 발간된 이래 7월에 일본어판이 시판되기 시작해 현재 35만부가 판매되었으며, 일본의 대형서점 대부분에서 2002년 판매실적 10위 안에 랭크되어 있을 정도로 유명해진 책이다. 저자가 역사분야에는 별다른 업적이 없는 젊은 한국인이라는 것 이외에도 기존 일본 사회에서는 존재하지 않았던 참신한 아이디어를 제시한 것으로 인해 일본의 독자들에게 깊은 인상을 남긴 것으로 평가되고 있다. 또한 이 책은 저자에게 가해진 한국 정부의 전방위 탄압으로 인해 수많은 일본인들에게 알려졌으며, 2002년 여름에는 저자가 출국금지되고 저자가 일본대사관에 망명을 신청했다는 소식이 전해지면서 본격적인 구명운동이 일어나기도 했다.

    이토히로부미에게 헌정된 책

    이 책이 얼마나 혁명적인 인식의 전환을 시도하고 있는가 하는 점은 책장을 펼치자마자 드러난다. 이 책은 조선과 일본의 혁명가인 김옥균과 이등박문에게 헌정되었으며, 저자는 헌시에서 김옥균과 이등박문을 살해한 집단을 ‘원수’로 규정하고 있다. 즉 김옥균을 살해한 민비와 이등박문을 살해한 안중근을 민족의 원수로 규정하면서 강력한 적개심을 표출하고 있는데, 이같은 인식의 배경은 책 전체를 걸쳐 일관되게 유지되고 있다.

    일본에 의해 시작된 조선의 문명개화, 일제시대는 우리에게 무엇이었나?
    이 책의 화두는 ‘문명개화’이다. 미개하고 야만적인 사회를 문명개화시키는 일은 그 어떤 가치보다도 앞서는 최우선 과제이며 민족주의나 독립지상주의 같은 이데올로기들은 전혀 중요하지 않다는 인식을 깔고 있다. 즉 당시 전세계에서 가장 미개했던 조선사회를 문명개화시킬 수 있다면 그 어떤 악덕도 선이 될 수 있으며, 이같은 과제를 완벽하게 수행한 조선총독부는 우리 민족의 은인이며 일본은 조선의 어버이가 될 자격이 있는 국가라는 것이다.

    독도를 우리 땅이라 우기는 것이 애국심인가?
    불법점령하고 있는 독도는 일본에 돌려주어야 한다.

    독도문제에 대한 저자의 인식도 충격적이다. 독도는 국제법상 1905년 이후 일본의 영토이며, 대한민국은 일본에 주권이 없었던 1952년 초 독도에 군대를 파견하여 지금까지 이 섬을 불법점령하고 있다는 것이다. 일본은 무력사용을 금지한 평화헌법으로 인해 독도를 공격할 수 없는 입장이다. 저자는 독도가 일본 영토임은 미국조차 인정하고 있으며 전 세계에서 독도가 한국 땅이라고 생각하는 나라는 하나도 없다고 주장한다.

    독립운동 비판

    이 책은 우리 사회에서 당연하게 통용되고 있는 ‘독립운동은 훌륭한 일이었다’는 인식에도 근본적인 의문을 제기하고 있다. 즉 독립운동은 매우 잘못된 일이었다는 것이다. 구한말의 국제정세를 볼 때 조선이 독립국으로 남아 있었다면 지금 우리나라는 전 세계에서 가장 미개한 지역이 되었을 것이며, 따라서 당시에는 일본과 손을 잡고 문명개화를 추진한 친일파들이 옳았으며 독립운동가들은 시대의 변화에 적응하지 못한 기회주의 집단이었다는 것이다.

    이 책의 주요 내용

    1. 한국과 중국은 일본을 비난할 자격이 있는가

    과거 일본이 일으킨 대동아전쟁은 히틀러의 침략전쟁과는 달리 올바른 명분을 지닌 아시아 해방전쟁이었으며, 따라서 전후 처리도 독일의 경우와는 달라야 한다. 한국과 중국에서 주장하는 일본의 전쟁범죄는 대부분 조작되거나 과장된 것이며, 오히려 과거사를 따져보면 한국이나 중국은 일본을 비난할 자격이 없는 국가들이다. 한국은 과거 베트남 등에서 수많은 양민을 학살한 추악한 과거를 지니고 있으며 중국은 아직도 많은 이민족의 땅을 강제점령하고 있는 침략국이다.

    1. 일제시대는 우리에게 축복이었다.

    일본의 통치로 인해 조선은 많은 발전을 이룩하였다. 30년 남짓한 기간동안 천만명도 안되던 인구는 2500만으로 늘었고 평균수명은 24세에서 45세로 늘었으며, 미개한 농업사회이던 조선은 단시일 내에 근대적인 자본주의 사회로 변모하였다. 본토에서는 우수한 교사들이 부임해 조선인들을 교육하였고 해마다 일본 정부로부터 엄청난 규모의 자금이 유입되어 각종 사회기반시설이 건설되었다. 일본에서는 많은 우수한 교사들이 부임해 조선인들을 교육하였고 해마다 일본 정부로부터 엄청난 규모의 자금이 유입되어 각종 사회기반시설이 건설되었다. 이 같은 변화는 조선이 독립국으로 남아있었다면 상상할 수조차 없는 것이다. 1920년대에는 일본에 대한 쌀 수출로 조선에는 갑부들이 속출하였으며 그 바탕 위에 소위 ‘민족자본’이라는 것이 생겨나게 되었다. 1920년대 조선의 문예부흥은 일본과 정확히 같은 시기에 시작된 것이며 오늘날 이광수와 최남선으로부터 시작해 김동인 이효석 김영랑 윤동주 홍난파 등 우리가 기억하는 수많은 작가와 예술가들은 대부분 이 시기에 등장한 인물들이다.

    1. 한일합병은 우리의 선택이었다.
       ? 개항 이후 조선의 혁명세력이 고심 끝에 합병을 추진하게 된 이유는 무엇인가.

    갑신정변 이래 수차례 시도된 시민혁명의 시도는 고종과 민비, 외세에 의해 번번이 좌절되었고 그 결과 동학과 독립협회 등 조선의 혁명세력은 일진회를 통해 하나로 뭉치게 되었다. 이들은 러일전쟁 과정에서 일본과 연합군을 이루어 참전하였고 러일전쟁이 승리한 뒤에는 본격적으로 일본의 힘을 빌어 조선의 문명개화를 이루는 노선을 추진한다. 한일합병은 이같은 조선 혁명세력의 뜻이 관철된 자주적인 선택으로 해석해야 한다.
