Wireless Number Portability is going national today when the second round of number switching kicks in. Last November the top 100 markets were eligible, but now it is everyone, especially the customers of regional carriers such as Alltel, US Cellular, Nextel Partners, and Western Wireless. During the first phase of WNP, there were fears that many millions would switch, but in the end only 2 million did. Writing in today’s Sun Sentinel, Ian Katz points out why many millions have not switched. One gets a feeling the phase two will be a bit of non event. The regionals in recent months have been were very aggressive in locking up customers with nice deals prior to WNP beginning in their markets. So what does it all mean? Well like any Hollywood blockbuster, the sequel is always a bit of a disappointment.
