Refinery 29, a website for women yesterday published 9 of SF’s hottest tech guys, a list that include my good friend designer Daniel Burka and fellow scribe Nick Bilton. Congrats boys!
After falling for the slideshow click bait, I was left with two thoughts — First — yay for forced diversity. Second, the uniformity of the look amongst all the guys who were featured in this slideshow: Skinny pants – rolled up. Tight plaid shirts. Scruffy appearance!
I refuse to believe that is the only “style” look we have in the SF Bay Area tech community. Actually it is a complete failure and sheer laziness of the style editor for not being able to look beyond this single-specific look. Secondly, by highlighting this one look specific to a certain type of dude, Refinery 29 is showing it unrefined tastes.
+1!
Not all were scruffy, not all were wearing plaid, nor had all rolled up their pants. However, I did notice a general disdain for anything colorful, and a lazy tendency to leave shirts untucked. Sadly, this is exactly the SF tech style, for better or worse. I myself have adopted a beard in the past year, but continue to sport tons of color in my outfits. I also tuck in my shirt, which makes any outfit look smarter. Compliments abound on the colors, mostly from women, predictably. Most men just don’t have the balls to wear anything bright.
Exactly. It’s as if SF itself didn’t have much of a say.

Lol @ Morgan Missen
seems like something between homeless and hipster… with a ‘members only’ top spin
I believe the “SF look” is referred to as metrosexual. Fact is, skinny jeans look good on no one. Funny post Om.
