We know Lance Armstrong is not quite strong these days but there is yet another US connection to Tour De France. France Telecom is using Aperto Networks’ broadband wireless access systems at this year’s Tour de France, giving spectators broadband Internet access while they attend the race. In addition, members of the media covering the event are using wireless Hot Zones that are being back hauled using this broadband wireless technology. As an aside, the systems delivers about 14 Mbps of throughput using a single channel in the 3.5 GHz band. The base stations move each day as the race progresses to the next location (shown on the route map on the official Tour de France website). The France Telecom press announcement (in French) can be found here.
