This is interesting … some years back, the Commonwealth of PA contracted with Pitt’s School of Information Sciences to create a “Technology Atlas”, which provided a mapping of telecommunications technology, libraries, schools, etc. within the state. In the aftermath of 9/11, the public presentation of this data became less precise to make it more difficult for potential terrorists to find targets (I could not find a link to this map on the PA website today).

    So, that leads to some interesting questions about mashes like this. There are clearly benefits and potential risks. There are also virtually no controls that public policy managers have on how or whether to publish this kind of information.
