Moto introduces three new phones at CTIA – A845, dual-mode UMTS/WCDMA handset, the V710, featuring 1.2-megapixel digital-camera and feature-packed clamshell for CDMA networks and the A840, the company’s first GSM/CDMA handset, bringing reliable global roaming to the global traveler. (My guess is that A840 is purely targeting the Vodafone/Verizon userbase.)
* Verizon Broadband Access powered by Nortel, Lucent
Nortel Networks, its current troubles notwithstanding continues to make steady recovery and has won a mega million dollar contract to provide hardware for Verizon’s new 3G compatible Broadband Access network. Lucent also snagged a $525 million three year deal as well. Nortel has a $167 million two year deal to provide hardware including base stations.
bq. “Some investors might have been speculating that Lucent has lost some of its market share within the Verizon Wireless account, but today’s contract awards should put that speculation to rest,” Lehman Brothers analyst Steve Levy said in a research note. Levy rates the stock “overweight.”
* UTStarcom, IPWireless strike a deal
IPWireless announced that UTStarcom is the first company to license IPWireless’ mobile broadband technology, and will manufacture the equipment in its facilities in China. UTStarcom will integrate the latest generation of IPWireless’ UMTS TDD chipset into several devices, including affordable broadband access modems and new devices such as VoIP handsets.
The Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association (CTIA) kicks off its CTIA Wireless 2004 conference today, billing it as the largest wireless trade show in the world. This year, the three-day show will take place at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta.
