Glenn Fleishman, normally a quiet thoughtful sort is speaking out forcefully today on the whole issue of EV-DO, Wi-Fi, and Andrew Seybold, who apparently has roiled up most WiFi insiders with his comments over on MuniWireless.

But his approach to external Wi-Fi, however reasonable some of his concerns are, has been ham-handed, often inaccurate, and biased towards licensed frequencies. I’d urge Seybold to disclose any past and present consulting arrangement with companies that compete in the space that he is offering public opinion about. He’s not a journalist, but he still writes like one.

Seybold, said that the 2.4 GHz frequency is getting crowded, performance degrading, and as a result the utility of the band is going to diminish, just like CB radio frequencies. Does Seybold have a point in making this argument? Absolutely – for the interference problems are a problem, though not insurmountable, as most Apple users very well know. (Airport has something called interference robustness, which somehow helps over come the problem!) Still, I think there is no either-or option. EV-DO has its advantages and so does Wi-Fi. I am just going to leave it at that!
