Sometimes, analysis comes ahead of the news. Like today. Last night I posted my analysis of why mobile is critical to Facebook and its future. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Facebook is in talks with Nokia (s NOK), the world’s largest phone maker, to embed its social network into Nokia phones. The Journal reports that Nokia is torn between starting its own social network or working with Facebook. It is a no-brainer — starting its own social network would be yet another not-so-smart move by Nokia, which still has to show that it has web chops. Partnering with Facebook, MySpace and others is the right way to go.
Yes, Nokia is way behind on this stuff. It blows my mind that I cant find a s60 facebook application, if i want to use fb on the move have to use the mobile site which is ok, but an app would be better.
you are right – partnership with Facebook, MySpace will be more fruitful.
So what happens in a year or three when people are sick of facebook and myspace and something new has come along? Nokia should invest in the next generation of “Social Network” and develop something entirely new and better. Facebook and MySpace are old news and will eventually be replaced by something even lamer.

Nokia should have a social networking platform where any current or future social network can plug in ..
A simple question.
Why facebook can’t develop application from Symbian SDK? Access to Contacts etc all available in SDK and infect symbian source is going to be released in any case. Its just matter of writing C++ code. If facebook doesn’t have they can contact me:-)

Unfortunately Nokia has inserted checks inside code and locked certain functionalities to developers. After discussion we got an impression that they locked it under pressure from operators. May be facebook require access to any such functionality.

When that happens, it would be time for Nokia to move on to partner with the next hot thing. It doesn’t make sense for them to try and reinvent everything. They are getting clocked by rivals in terms of hardware and they shouldn’t be bumbling around with me-too services.

My god is that embarassing…
Does it make business sense for Nokia to bundle facebook? Yes, tonnes. Speculations on the longevity of facebook seem to ignore the life expectations of mobile handsets. If I were Nokia, I would die for facebook now, and pray that facebook dies in 3 years so that I can make the next gen handsets with the next gen apps. And no, I wouldn’t get into the web app business of any kind, because hey, that’s not my “core competence” – nor is it my bread and butter earner.

The aggregation of social nets like Meebo’s use of IM clients is spot on.
Now cloud hosting the social networks and the INTEGRATED messaging functionality in a CLEAN and RICH way will give the user’s the choice to add and remove social networks and IM clients as they perceive value in each.
