Fiberhoods growing fast in US
Now this might come as a surprise to many, but the number of communities with fiber-to-the-home has gone up sharply in past 15 months or so, according to a study by TIA. I am going call these fiberhoods. Research results released today show that fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) installations have grown 83 percent since October 2004, now reaching 398 communities in 43 states. The study was presented at a Capitol Hill press conference hosted by Senators Charles Schumer (D-NY) and Gordon Smith (R-OR). Now clearly this is not the best case scenario, given that the Bells have only just started to roll-out the service, but I personally think it is a good start. The Fiberhood List
what a great coinage- fiberhood will be around as a phrase for a long time. (trademark fibrehood for all of us outside the US who spell properly)

I know it is not that simple, but it bothers me to contemplate that most of these FTTH towns are the whitest towns one could imagine. If I saw a “ethnic type” in Holliston or Taunton, MA, for example, it would blow my mind. I'[m guessing this is single mode fiber, if you know what I mean.
I think Jesse meant to say they must not be using wavelength division multiplexing.
