[qi:_earth2tech] Most people hate junk mail — how many are willing to pay to stop it? Palo Alto-based startup GreenDimes is betting a lot will, and according to PEHub has raised a whopping $20.5 million in a first round of funding, led by Tudor Investment Corporation. Now that’s a lot of dimes, enough to fill up a big landfill. More information is here.
I’m not sure how you could create any script that would catch 75-90% of spam without also catching actual desired e-mail. But if it worked, $3 a month wouldn’t be that hefty a price tag, especially for the unfortunate sould that have to sift through thousands of pieces of it a day.

@mikeelliott1… the post does not mention spam anywhere… what they’re talking about is junk SNAIL mail.
They also plan trees on your behalf while you are a customer so not only do you save trees by reducing snail mail – you also create new ones. It’s a great example of eco-friendly business.
thanks sean and el fiscal to point those important points out. but $20.5 million. yikes.
I signed up for http://41pounds.org/ a few months ago and have noticed a sizable drop off in the number of catalogs filling the mail box.
I feel like I should point out that $20 million in dimes would only fill up about 20 cubic metres, which is barely enough to fill a large room.
I don’t know why I feel compelled to say that.
Thanks for the info about stopping junk mail. 41pounds is another great service that does the leg-work to stop junk mail – and it costs just $8.20 a year (2 cents a day). 41pounds also donates more than 1/3 of the fee to its nonprofit partners such as StopGlobalWarming.org, American Forests and Habitat for Humanity (East Bay).
