When I asked T-Mobile USA Chief Technology Officer Cole Brodman about his company’s 4G wireless plans a couple of weeks ago at our Mobilize 09 conference, he declined to elaborate. However, he did say that T-Mobile would follow the same technology curve as any typical GSM-based wireless company. In other words, T-Mobile USA is going to use Long Term Evolution (LTE) technologies. Today, we have more clarity on T-Mobile’s 4G plans.

T-Mobile USA’s parent, Deutsche Telekom, is rumored to be in talks with MetroPCS and Clearwire (s CLWR) to get access to their spectrum to build out its wireless broadband networks, according to a report on Bloomberg.

Clearwire has said that it needs another $2 billion to build out its network, and a partnership with Deutsche Telekom would help solve that problem. This report makes a lot more sense than the rumor about Deutsche Telekom buying Sprint (s S), which owns 51 percent of Clearwire.

Both Clearwire and MetroPCS have enough spectrum for a company like T-Mobile to build out its own 4G network. When I spoke with Clearwire CEO Bill Morrow, he told me that the company has enough spectrum and that it is flexible enough to adapt to any wireless standard. In addition, Morrow said that Clearwire’s backhaul network is an important asset.
