  1. the far more interesting question is whether jabber/XMPP make SIP eventually obsolete. SIP carries with it a rather complicated legacy of being forced to mimic voice calling feature sets. XMPP may offer a far better choice for delivering ‘services’ over IP where services include all kinds of communications and communications between one’s ‘information’ domains and devices as well. my portal based information, my devices based information, and my PC based information all needs to be connected. and we all know by now that organizing this information is so 90s. so google (Search) + XMPP/jabber is a very interesting set of developments along with the G|sidebar announced this week.

  2. Anyone who buys Skype would buy them for their user base. As this is something Google already has, the overlap between Google users and Skype users is significant, Google wouldn’t gain anything from the deal.

  3. What would the world look like if IM/VoIP users of Yahoo, Google, AOL, Skype (and even MSN) could all talk for free?

  4. Would be very interesting if this IM service has logging capabilities with online archiving. To many, the ability to reference/search IMs is just as important as referencing/searching e-mails.

  5. Skype will Out of Google Talk’s Federation???

The source from Google Talk for Developer -http://www.google.com/talk/developer.html#realtime :
    ——————————————————————————————————
“We’re committed to open communications standards, and want to offer Google Talk users and users of other service providers alike the flexibility to choose which clients, service providers, and platforms they use for their communication needs.â€?

“We are working closely with Earthlink and Sipphone to federate EarthLink’s Vling service and Sipphone’s Gizmo Project with the Google Talk service as quickly as possible, while offering the best possible user experience.”

EarthLink and Sipphone VoIP service are based on SIP open standard. So Google Talk will join SIP Peering Network (http://www.gizmoproject.com/other-networks.html) very soon.

A global interoperability, extensibility and open standard protocols/codecs will be the ultimate path for the IP communications.
