A Heart-to-Heart with GigaOM Readers

Happy New Year. As you may have noticed, my byline hasn’t been up on the site for a few days. That’s because the holidays weren’t exactly my most jolly.

I had a heart attack on Dec. 28. I was able to walk into the hospital for treatment that night and have been recovering here ever since. With the support of my family and my team, I am on the road to a full recovery. I am going to be OK.

Katie and Liz and the rest of the team will be posting updates on my progress on the site. I’ll be back and writing again as soon as possible.

Now living a healthier life isn’t just one of my New Year’s resolutions, it’s doctor’s orders. Friends and family have purged my apartment of smokes, scotch and all my favorite fatty foods — I am even going to be drinking decaf. I won’t be refashioning my avatar’s stogie with a celery stick, but I will be taking better care of my health.

I hope you do, too.

Best wishes,
Om

  1. Best wishes for a much improved New Year. 🙂

Your site has been invaluable to anyone wanting to keep up with the consequences of the new networks.

    Thanks…and good wishes.

  2. Man, take it easy. I read your blog every day, and I hope you make a full recovery. You can scale down from GigaOm to MegaOm and still be the best blog out there.

  3. Om…

Glad to hear you are okay. I was surprised to find out that I had high blood pressure this past year and have jumped into a exercise and diet program to combat it.

Take your time recovering. Your family and friends are the most important things in the world. I’ll be praying for a swift recovery.

    Sean

  4. So sorry to hear, Om — I certainly hope you get better quickly. Your team has been doing very well in keeping up the relevant work, and I’m sure things will only get better once you come back.

  5. Hey buddy
Hope you get well soon..this was a shocker and glad to hear you’re doing well now. Go easy on yourself now…

  6. Your other doctor is ready to visit as soon as we are back. Both Helene and I are as concerned as anyone and are there for anything you may need.

Here’s to a speedy recovery, and we’re on the team to ENFORCE your resolutions.

Touch the smokes I break your fingers…Helene says she’ll break more than that.

    Get well my brother,

    Andy

  7. Wow, so sorry to hear that. Hope you are better soon. Thinking maybe you should send your friends to clean out my house.

  8. Om,
Very glad to read that you are recovering after a heart attack, I hope you get well soon.
Take care and wishes for a speedy recovery.
    Dimitris.

  10. m, that’s terrible news, but thankfully you’re still with us. Take care of that ticker and stick around for a while…we’ll be waiting for that firt Android phone review that only Om can bring. Rest up and get well!

  11. Great to hear the prognosis is good! Scary to hear you had to go through that. Feel better soon, and doing without the crud will be easier than you think.

  12. Om,

Your periodic gruff exterior (perhaps about to get gruffer short term from absence of caffeine?) can’t hide the fact that you’re one of the “good guys” in the industry.

All of us here at the Agency wish you a speedy recovery.

    Take care,

    Lou

  13. The first 50-90 days of being in your normal routine without the coffee, cigars, and booze are the hardest. After that, you’ll just enjoy having more energy and sleeping better. Glad you’re OK; take it easy!

  14. As one reader who thoroughly appreciates your plentiful wit, I am thankful to learn you are recovering and wish you well in your efforts to improve your health. The lifestyle changes likely won’t be easy, but I suspect you have the strength and support you need to get through this challenge triumphantly. All the best to you Om!

  15. Best of Luck! South Asians like us suffer miserably at the hands of saturated fats in American fare. Lack of adaptation to this high cholesterol diet makes for dangerous grubbin’! Anyway, take care of yourself and here’s wishing you a speedy recovery!

  16. We’re so glad to hear that you are recovering and we wish you all the best in 2008. You are truly a special and valued voice in the IT industry and a class-act as a human being. Let us know if we can do anything to help.

  17. Hey buddy, hoping you are up and running soon, come over and say hi in NYC and i’ll treat you to some swedish health food!

“It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver.” – Gandi

BTW stop by NYC in fashion week and we can both run for the models, perfect workout!

  18. Om –

Whoa – this is shocking news!

I hope you get well soon buddy! PLEASE take the required rest suggested by your doctors – we need much more Om well beyond 2008!

    Best,
    JG

  19. everyone here has already said it, but i’m shocked and saddened– and yet relieved at least to hear that you are ok and recovering. please let me know anything i can do to help in the mean time! my thoughts are with you

    sarah

  20. Om, glad to hear you are recovering well. May I say, enjoy the slow life for a change. May be its time for kindle after all.

Get well soon and we look forward to hearing back from you..

  21. Om, glad to hear that you will be okay. Must have been scary. I’m making a mental note to remember your experience the next time I think about pouring a glass of amber liquid or scarfing down a plate of BBQ ribs!

    Get well (very) soon.

  22. Just taking a moment to remind you to always take care my good friend. Glad to hear you’re doing ok and on the mend, but say vigilant and don’t let yourself become complacent. Health is our most important resource to protect.

  23. I’m sorry Om, but glad to hear that you are making a quick recovery. I read the blog every day and particularly love NewTeeVee. My best to you and your family and wishing you a happy and healthy 2008.

  24. Om – Feel better. we will say a little prayer for you here where it is a local call. Wishing you a full and speedy recovery & See ya soon.

  25. Om, sorry to hear about this but glad to hear that you are doing well, getting good treatment and caring friends. Stay healthy and hope your recovery continues to go well!

    Shannon

  26. Hi Om – I’m glad to know you are okay. I guess you were right about that foie gras in Paris. I hope to see you again soon for some carrot juice and bran muffins 😉

    Lots of love
    Kathy

  27. Om!

So sorry to hear of your holiday health crisis. But I know that you will make a marvelous recovery in this brand new year. Drop me a line if you need help with anything at all.

    Cynthia B.

  28. None of us want to see a celery stick either! But we do want to keep hearing from a healthy Om for a long, long time to come. Get well soon, buddy! Best wishes for a happy, healthy and successful new year, and many many more new years.

  29. I hope you feel better buddy. Get some rest, do some rehab and get a bike and ride around. It’ll kick your ass at first but then you’ll be dropping weight and put less of a strain on the old ticker.

  30. I went into the hospital Friday night, perhaps same time as you, with dizziness, shortness of breath, and got full thyroid/enzyme workup. Luckily, my prognosis was OK, but it makes me completely empathize with your experience. Good luck and take good care of your health.

  31. I’m very glad to hear you’re on the mend Om. Our thoughts and wishes are with you for a speedy recovery and an easy time following your new health regime. Take good care.

  32. Om, man you sure go through a lot of trouble to clear the inbox so you can watch Roger clear his name Sunday night. Get better, dude. @CZ

  33. Get well soon, Om. Glad to hear you’re recovering and we’ll continue to get your news analysis. Take it easy for now though. No late nights working on stories, ya hear?

Only decaf now? Ouch. I’m sure you’ll find a way to stay mentally alert and write great articles.

  34. Om,

Glad to hear that you are doing better now. Also glad to hear that you have gotten rid of a lot of unhealthy stuff. John said it right…you can go down in scale from GigaOm to MegaOm and we will still keep reading your posts! Here’s to a healthier new year for you.

  35. Om, So sorry to hear the news, but very glad to hear you are recovering! Best wishes for a speedy recovery… my thoughts will definitely be with you!

    Dan

  36. Om,

That’s shocking news! But you know, it’s not all bran muffins and carrot sticks from this point forward. After being warned by my own doctor about the dangers of high fat food, I began to substitute … hot peppers. It opened up entirely new vistas in eating.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery, and stay away from the stogies!

    Alec.

  37. I knew this was going to be heavy when I saw the title, and it sure was. Heart disease is serious, but you can live with it, as I’ve found out. I had bypass surgery in 2002, and I’m still here. You can also quit smoking, it’s easy when you have motivation.

Om, when you’re feeling better let’s go for a walk.

  38. Ouch! Very happy to hear that you’re recovering. Let us know if you start “health blogging” (a more serious twist on Jason’s fatblogging). Might be a good place to exchange tips, or just to gripe: “I’m hungry!”

  39. Om,

We all wish you a speedy recovery. I would humbly ask that your other friends and acquaintances join me in this prayer for healing, called a “Mi Sheberach”

May the One who blessed our ancestors, Sarah and Abraham, Rebecca and Isaac, Leah, Rachel and Jacob bless Om Mailk along with all of the ill among us. Grant insight to those who bring healing, courage and faith to those who are sick, love and strength to us and to all who love them. God, let your spirit rest upon all who are ill and comfort them. May they and we soon know a time of complete healing, a healing of the body and a healing of the spirit and let us say: Amen.

  40. Om – wish you a speedy recovery – if you are still in NYC and I can do anything for you – please do not hesitate to give me a call or email.

  41. Hey Om, you must have a strong will to “walk into the hospital for treatment that night” did you remember to pop in a Bayer Aspirin when you started feeling it or something. Best of luck of your recovery and hope to read more of your articles soon.

    Cesar

  42. I’d just like to say that Om is the best boss I’ve ever had (and that includes my mom). Let’s just say he stuck with me even after my own extended stay in a hospital (not to mention the illness that precluded it).

So get better, man! I miss you already.

  43. Om, I was saddened to hear this news. It is just a reminder that we need to appreciate each new day of our life with joy and take utmost care to make it last. From the famous Stanford graduation speech from Steve Jobs, we must make the best use of the time we have now. Like all good things, it will end. I wish to see a more healthy, fit and prolific Om soon. Speedy recovery.

  44. Wishing you all the best Om. And — on a side note — happy to recommend a fabulous nutritionist who has helped my husband and me break our bad food habits over the past year in a reasonable, sensible way. My hub has lost 90 lbs and I’m down 50.

    Michelle @ footnoted

  45. Sorry to hear about the attack, Very glad you recovered from it soon after. Hope and pray you get better right away and yes, enuff of that smoke and fatty stuff ..

    best,
    Chetan

  46. Om, nothing is worth giving up your health for. I am glad you got a wake up call that left you healing and thinking, because your life will be richer and better now. So glad to hear you will be okay, and must remind you that you come from a rich meditative tradition and you shouldn’t try so hard to be “American.” We have all the heart attacks.
    Namaste and much love
    Francine

  47. First comment in German here:

    Gute Besserung wünsche ich!

As another commneter is saying we´re here and will read again, when you come back.
So, take all the time necessary to recover.

    Wishing the best,
    Torsten

  48. Om, I’m glad you’re going to be OK. But I cannot believe you’re going offline cold turkey. Don’t worry. Someone will slip you a blackberry and you’ll squeeze in posts from the treadmill.

    All the best.

  49. Om, You know what, it is a club you just joined. The life changing type. I joined in 2002. Now doing Triathlon this year as a result. No-one knows how it feels nor how it felt. I wish you well and a offer a skype line should you want to ever discuss. It helped me 🙂

  50. Om,
My best wishes to you. Your insight and reason are sorely needed in the blogosphere, so I look forward to you posting again soon.
    Dan

  51. Om, you are one of the nicest and smartest people that I’ve had the pleasure to meet. This industry just wouldn’t be the same without you, so please stick to your guns and get better.

  52. Take care of yourself, Om. I’ve gone through the fun of hospitals and medicine, and know the change of habits can be hard and take time.

Wishing you the best of luck for 2008.

  53. Om, we did miss your byline and are very touched by your message. Sending you best wishes for a prompt recovery, and a healthy New Year 2008.

  54. om, we’re so grateful for everything you contribute from insight to humor, please take care and get better soon.

  55. As I say regularly to you in IMs, I miss you every day, my friend. Get well fast. We need you.

And if I catch you posting before you get entirely better I’ll personally come there and take your MacBook away. Seriously.

    Paul K.

  56. Whoa… this just hit me like a ton of bricks. Take it easy, take care of yourself, and when you’re back on your feet we can get some steamed fish and veggies.

So glad you’re ok… be well my friend.

    jason

  57. You are now one of the survivors, and you will change your lifestyle, and live many long years, the tech industry be damned.

They didn’t get rid of you yet, Om. There is more to be done.

  58. Glad to hear you’re on the mend, hope to see you up and around soon.

Counting on you for a few A’s games this spring. I’ll bring carrots and celery sticks for us to munch on:-)

    Mark

  59. Om ~

Rest and get better quickly. Let me know if I can help with anything while you (hopefully) take it easy for a while.

    Jim

  60. Hello Om,

    Good to know you’re OK.

I went through a similar (but less serious) trial a year and a half ago, and I’ve since readjusted (lost 20Kg) and vastly improved my condition by dint of walking a lot more every day (besides all the rest that you’ll probably hear a hundred times over the next few weeks).

Be patient. Relax. Enjoy the company of your family right now, and prepare to start enjoying all sorts of different stuff as you begin to get out, exercise and change all sorts of little things about your daily habits.

It always turns out for the best, believe me.

  61. From a reader whose own unexpected hospitalization (followed by an urgent bypass) was 7+ years ago – let me offer anecdotal evidence that there can be good life after these events. Once over the initial hump I’ve been as (or more) active / productive / happy as ever — and I wish and predict the same for you!

  62. Om,

Please do what you need to do to take care of yourself, even if it means taking more time off from blogging and attending events. Your readers and friends will all be here when you come back. Rest up and be well.

    Cathryn/Creative Sage(tm)

  63. Hi Om;

Hope you recover fully and pls pls stay away from all the amoke and scotch. 🙂
And you better start walking and getting to MegaOm from GigaOm as someone said up there in comments.

    Walk & Exercise Karo!

Here is to a speedy recovery!

    Ravneet

  64. Om, I’m a lurker who never comments but I’ll de-lurk for this: Here’s to a healthy 2008 and your quick recovery.

(P.S. I quit caffeine this summer and am surprised to say that I don’t think you’ll regret it at all, given the fine decaf lattes available ’round here.)

  66. Om, I am sure I speak for everyone who reads this site when I say: We love ya. Seriously. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. And please do blog about the changes you make in your lifestyle — they may help the rest of us as well.

  67. Om,

So sorry to hear about the heart attack – but so glad that you’re ok. All the best to you – love and prayers on your speedy recovery. May 2008 be just the first in many many new years that you continue to spend with us.

    Best,

    Dave

  68. Om,

I was completely shocked to hear this news. I’m almost at a loss of words. You’ve never met me, but I feel like I’ve met you. I have followed GigaOM and its accompanying blogs for … what seems like forever. You and your staff have enlightened me and countless others and are always a great source for the latest buzz in the industry.

Of course, the great news is that you’re still here and you’re recovering. It will be tough, as a number of previous commenters have pointed out, but it’s truly worth it.

Writing should be the least of your concerns — getting better should be the first. Seriously. Don’t worry about your byline not appearing as often; your readership more than understands.

I wish you all the best in getting better and look forward to you returning when you’re ready – regardless of how far down the road that may be.

    -Ben

  69. Om –
Best of luck on your recovery and take care. And please, don’t try posting under a different name. We’ll know it’s you :-).

    Cheers,
    SM

  70. Please don’t break our hearts Om. Do get well soon. Our best wishes will always be with you. Happy new year.

You are good at heart and you will have a good life..long one at that. Take care.

    Nag.B

  71. Tons of healing beams, lots of resolve and energy for the lifestyle changes and a question. What do you really want to do with your life? What are you doing to make that come true. Your story is a reminder to ask ourselves the important questions.

    Take Care

  72. Om,

I read gigaom every day and I noticed your absence and had hoped you were on an exotic island. Instead you were in the ER! I hope you have a speedy recovery.

    Be well. Mark K.

  73. Get well soon Om. We shared Thanksgiving dinner at Josh’s house a few years ago and I have followed your columns and posts almost religiously since then. All your readers are looking forward to doing the same for years to come. Healthy wishes for a speedy recovery!

  74. Wow, good to hear your ok Om.

Don’t forget your salvation in Jesus (everyone). Life is short.

  76. Om, get well soon – your feed was my first subscription in my google reader. I continue to look to you for your perspective on the wireless industry and always enjoy the thorough research. This setback will only be remembered as the start of your training for the olympic coverage in 2008!

  77. Om,

Get well soon buddy!! Take as much time as you need to feel better- your readers aren’t going anywhere…
    JC

  78. Om, Julie and I are sending our thoughts and prayers. Get well quick. I’ll contact Mefhil to see if they can start making some leaner meals. If all goes well we’ll have you out doing a 10k run by the end of the year!

  79. Om – Helen and I send you our very best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Love and happiness trumps crankiness every time, bro’. You get yourself better and later on we’ll all drive you nuts with health tips.

  80. Pretty gutsy (and, BTW, blogger-authentic) to disclose this to your readers. It gives us all an opportunity to support you in this time of healing especially after all of the value you’ve given out for so long to all of us.

Priority #1 is taking care of yourself and take whatever time you need. Your web assets will continue to thrive since your personal brand and values imprint is the directive force any team would need to keep it headed down the right path.

  81. Om,

Take some time to read Ray Kurzweil’s Fantastic Voyage. (http://www.fantastic-voyage.net)

After 20 years…it is the only book that truly connected me with my health and well being. Ray throws in some nano-bots from time to time to keep it interesting. (:

    I also highly recommend Aikido…

    Be well.

    Keith

  82. Just learned of your status via an email from Andy.

Two years ago I had surgery to repair an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) which, fortunately, had been detected before it burst. As far as I’m concerned I’m only here today because of the developments in medical imaging (CT scanners and ultrasound) and treatment over the past decade along with my own doctor’s request for an ultrasound for a non-cardiovascular condition that proved negative. It was a set of circumstances that changed my perspective on life; today I just count every new day as a blessing. (A burst AAA, which gives no external warning signs, provides little chance of survival.)

Also I have the good fortune to have a son who is not only training to become a cardiologist but also is an accomplished inventor of medical devices for cardiovascular imaging and treatment. (Did they give you a rinspiration treatment?) With today’s medical ecosystem and technology, and given you walked in under your own steam, sounds like your prognosis is pretty good (provided Helene doesn’t have to rap your fingers).

Over the past two years I have had the opportunity to meet many wonderful people in this communications technology space. While we have crossed paths mostly in the blogosphere (and only once physically), you have become numero uno in my books for all you do to keep us informed and on our toes.

Best wishes for a full and speedy recovery; just keep in mind your health comes ahead of your work. We all want you here for the long term. No Blackberries in the hospital!!

  83. Sir Ji,

Daaru-vaaru chhodo..sehat ke liye achchha nai hota hai..Get well soon..we are missing you on revision3.

  84. OM:

It’s always a shock to hear this kind of thing, and more of a shock when you’re the one going through it. My first run in with heart issues was three years ago, and even though I have bad family history in this area, it was still a surprise when that first abnormal feeling hit. I’m blessed they caught things in time (two arteries were 99 percent blocked, and I have three stents). Now it’s meds, healthier diet (I refuse to give up caffeine), exercise (the dogs make sure), twice yearly trips to the the cardiologist, and annual nuclear stress tests (I don’t mind these, I joke with the staff, they play soothing jazz music, I fall asleep … and there are snacks and juice afterward) It’s all integrated in my life, and I don’t think about it much. (I’m early 40s).

I wish you all the best. Take your time and have a smooth recovery. Ignore stories about so and so going back to work five days after his heart attack. Patooey. Take it easy for as long as you can.

    Jeff

  85. Very sorry to hear it, Om, but very glad to hear that you’ll be taking care of yourself. I’m sure a lot of us will learn from you, as we’ve learned from you about other matters. Get well soon!

  86. Ah buddy, I hope you’re okay man. We haven’t chatted in awhile but my heart goes out for ya, good luck with the recovery Om.

  87. Best wishes for a speedy recovery and good luck with everything. You’re certainly missed here, but don’t take that as pressure to get back into things before you’re fully recovered.
    Cheers man!

  88. Om!

Very heartened to hear that you’re on the mend. I am rooting for you!

Just know that there is a whole constellation of people out here sending the best of thoughts your way.

  93. Hope you feel better! As a former smoker, I can promise you that life as a non-smoker is 100000 times better. It’s tough the first couple days then again at the 3 month mark for some reason, but after that.. life improves drastically by the month.

I hope you have a very fulfilling year!

  94. Best wishes for a very fast and full recovery. Hang in there and make the most of it.

    Best regards,

  95. Speedy and easy recovery to you. Tofu with enough seasoning is actually quite edible. The fan club will be here as long as it takes.

  96. Om,

Best wishes on your recovery. We all miss you, but please don’t rush coming back — enjoy your little time off.

You have my best wishes for a complete recovery. I hope you take it easy for a while and come back to work refreshed, happy, and healthy.

  100. Om,

I’ve been reading your material for a while now and I’m convinced that you’re the best tech journalist out there. You provide readers with valuable insight and a healthy dose of dry wit.

Your heart attack serves as a reminder to us all that life is fragile. Take care of yourself and get well soon.

    Geoff

  101. Om, I hope you get well soon. South Asian men are particularly vulnerable to heart disease, and I hope more of your readers will take your message to heart.

  102. Om, I’m glad to hear you will recover, and we look forward to your return. Often when life throws a curve ball, it’s a grand opportunity to make substantive and meaningful changes.

    Get well swiftly.

  103. In addition to all of the things your doctor is ordering, Om, you’ve already got what it takes for a full recovery and long and healthy life: a positive outlook and a sense of humor. Looking forward to seeing you ’round the valley real soon. — Brian

  104. Get well soon Om! Hope to see you back and posting very soon, but not before you are well.

Remember, moderation in everything, including moderation.

  105. Om –

We all wish you a fast recovery and a happy and healthy new year.

    You’re missed!

  106. This was shocking. Makes me quit/reduce smoking too!
But I am sure you will be back doubly strong, physically & mentally. Please take good care. Cheers to life!

  107. Very shocked to hear the news. But great to see your positive attitude. Wish you a speedy recovery. Bounce back soon!

    Falguni

  108. Wow, here’s to getting well soon!

Take it easy, relax, get some calming music and get plenty of rest.

Thank you for your outstanding contributions to the tech community. You are one my most valuable and trusted resources. Here’s to a speedy and healthy recovery!

  109. Om

Horrified to get the news, and glad that you’re recovering. You’re the very best in the world in what we both do, covering today’s Internet and telecom.

As soon as feel better, I'll be happy to prove to you there are some delicious recipes that are low fat and healthy.

You know me as a researcher, but probably didn't realize that skill includes medline and similar medical research. It's always best to have great doctors you can trust, but if you're curious or unsure about anything let me go to work and build you a file.

     Get better soon.

  110. Om, I send you all my best wishes for a speedy recovery. While you have a knack for making my job really difficult, I have the utmost respect for you. Thanks for keeping us honest and I’ll eagerly await your next post on Facebook. All the best, Brandee

  111. Hi Om – Sorry to hear about your heart attack but glad to hear you are feeling better and that you have such a positive outlook. Best wishes for a speedy recovery (and thanks for your many contributions to the tech blogosphere – and here’s to many more in the future!)

  112. Om-

Your news was very sobering and I’m glad you chose to share it with us. It definitely makes me think about my New Year’s resolutions a bit more seriously as well.

We met a few weeks back when you interviewed me and Thede Loder from Boxbe.

Take care of yourself and get well soon.

    Cheers,
    Randy

  113. Hey Om,

My father had a heart attack last March and although it was a terrifying experience for my entire family, the doctors say that the ultimate impact it will have had on his health is a beneficial one because it has forced him to improve his diet and exercise habits.

Whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger… In that spirit, I’d also be happy to show you some great runs around SF!

    Take care of yourself.

    Reed

  114. Om, glad to hear you’re ok. You’ve come a long way since we worked at Forbes.com in the bad old days of the previous century. As one of your former colleagues and now fans of Gigaom, I am sending you healthy vibes for a full and speedy recovery. Besides, if you don’t, how will Rosario Dawson play you in the next movie?
    –Adam

  115. Om, just left you a vm. I am still in total shock.
Terribly glad to hear you are on the road to recovery. Pls do take care!
    Happy new year.

  116. Om,

Focus on your health and lifestyle. Be selfish for a bit. Don’t worry about work or pleasing others.

Nevertheless, I wait in anticipation of your return…

    All the best,
    Aidan Henry

  117. How scary! But I’m so glad you are going to be ok. Best wishes to you on your recovery and living a more healthy life. It’s not always easy giving up our vices, so best of luck and remember you have a lot of love and support from family, friends, colleagues and all of us readers.

    Sending healing energy your way!
    🙂

  118. All of the best Om and get healthy! You’re needed! If you need to relax, come up to Central Oregon and I can show you around / get you to relax for a while…

  119. Not the most original here, but take care and best of luck on the road to recovery. I hope to see you giving it to Dvorak soon on Cranky Geeks! GreginChicagoland

  120. Om, I wish you a speedy recovery! After a look at all the comments from your friends and readers all aroud the world, I am sure you will feel confident about 2008… You are not alone that’s for sure 😉

  121. Judging by the outpouring of comments here, I’d say that your crisis has become a lot of people’s warning. Who would have thought you’d be our “canary in the mine”? Best wishes for a speedy recovery from all of us here.

  122. Om,

I’m sorry to hear that your holidays were filled with health adventures instead of tech joys. Get well soon. We’ll miss you on the interwebs in the mean time.

    • Daniel
  123. Om, so glad to hear you’re OK, and we’re all thinking of you here in New York.

Our best wishes for the new year and a speedy recovery from everyone at NNN.

  124. Get well. I guess I won’t be bumming another Dunhill of you next time we meet. Still miss your hilarious rants at the B 2.0 pitch meetings. I look forward to seeing your posts in my RSS reader again soon. Take good care of yourself.

  125. dear Om:

You’v got to take care. But you will be allright.
There’s too many out there that need you. Best wishes for a speedy and long lasting recovery.

    kind regards
    Sridhar Pai

  126. My advice is to give up work and really kick back. At 41 its not just the diet or stogies but the stress too. My friend had one last june but didn’t make it out to the end of the year after trying to get back to work. God rest Jack, and please don’t put your life on the line.

    x

  127. Glad to hear you are ok Om. Here is wishing you a speedy recovery and a healthy 2008. May families thoughts and prayers are with you and yours.

    Warmest regards,
    Rick

  128. Om!

A big hug from me Om! Very sorry to hear the news. But jump back in with a the new year and I guess some modified habits !

  129. Hi Om,

Just read Mike’s email and also left you a VM on your mobile. Really glad to hear that you are doing good, our prayers and well wishes with you. If you need a peaceful surrounding in Sacramento my home is available 🙂

Happy New Year as well and hope to see ya soon.

    Regards,

    Your Punjabi Pra

    Naveed 🙂

  130. Om, my friend,
Like our pal Dave Winer, I’m in the club of cardiac patients (different malady). It’s a wake-up call, a second-chance, a near-miss. You can expect to get lots of support from your numberless friends online. When you feel tempted to go for that Wendy’s triple with bacon and two cheeses, just let us know and we’ll give you the backing you need. The new, svelt Om will come out on the other end of this. There are running shoes in your future. And you know what? It feels good. In fact, it’s an addiction worse than Quarter Pounders. I am sure you will take this on with the doggedness that you devote to a story or a startup. So I know you’ll be fine. so get walking, then running. And enjoy the turkey burgers.
    jeff

  131. Om, now I almost feel guilty for stealing your nametag at the NewTeeVee conference. Almost.

Get better and listen to your mom, no more smoking.

    -Kent

  132. Om, thank goodness you are OK, all the best for a full recovery and a healthy 2008!

Let’s hope you drag some other techies into health by your example. 🙂

  133. Om,

Ive been reading your writing since the Business 2 days. Pretty much from when GigaOm came into existance. I hope you do better soon. The important thing is not to take stress and have a healthy lifestyle .. so relax, stay fit and reduce work hours a bit. Gigaom is a top notch blog and am sure will continue to be since you have a great team in place.

    Wish you a speedy recovery!

  134. Om, Care for yourself and accept the help and support of others.

You were incredibly supportive of our son, let others return that kind of care.

    Get well.

  135. Dear Om,

I feel for you, it’s been two weeks that I’m spending one hour per day at the hospital. The reason you may ask ? My father had some kind of heart problem too on the 25 december, we thought it was nothing but then one of his lungs started to fill with water and we had to take him to emergencies. However, he is getting well, but there is a lot of effort to make (he also has diabetes and kidney problems).

Anyways, I’m just saying that because I know these kind of things are hard to deal with. It can depress you, and bring sadness in your life. I’ll just say that I wish you the best of luck and a very fast recovery and that I can’t wait to see you on the show again !

    Cheers,
Matthieu. (One of your french readers that is ashamed to post a comment for the first time for such a reason. What can I say ? I’m a Web Worker and I’m mostly working on my personnal Web 2 app and reading WebWorkerDaily 😉

  136. I had a heart attack a year ago right before Christmas at the age of 45. Quite a shock and wake up call. I recovered fast, was home in days, but combined with winter blues made it a difficult start of the year. Now my spirits are up, I’ve more stamina the I’ve had for years, I’m 30 lbs lighter (and 30 to go), I’m exercising at the Berkeley YMCA with a friend 3 days a week, and my blood chemistry and other tests are great. So it will be a tough couple of months coming up, but stick it out and figure out how to make your life-style changes livable, and you’ll be much better soon!

  137. Om – relax, get some sleep, catch up on Aqua Teen Hungerforce, and we’ll look forward to seeing you soon!

  138. Om,

Please, please, please listen to your doctor and get well – for the (long) rest of your life.

I attended a funeral today for one of two close friends, both of whom died last week from heart attacks. One was 60, the other only 53.

I can’t take anymore of this!! GET WELL!!

  139. Om,
Glad to hear the long-term looks good and very sorry to hear about the short-term health issues. You and the work you do are so important to many, many folks. Take good care of yourself and get better soon.

  140. Om, best wishes for a speedy recovery. You will come back stronger and far more dangerous. Let us know if there’s anything we can do to help.

  141. Wow. Talk about a wake up call. It could be any of us. Wishing you a speedy recovery. Events like this put things into perspective very quickly. Here’s to a long and happy life.

    Chin chin

    Tom

  142. I had no idea. Was wondering where you were when the last email exchange about getting together during the holidays stopped abruptly … when you get better, you’re in for a long lecture, buddy.

    love, Sramana

  143. Om, best wishes for a speedy recovery. I have some good news — you don’t have to give up fatty foods (smoking yes, but not fatty foods).

If you count calories, you can eat whatever you want as long as you don’t exceed your daily limit and don’t reach your limit too early in the day.

Watch The Biggest Loser, which uses this method, and also check out the National Weight Control Registry. http://www.nwcr.ws

Learn about caloric density — that’s the holy grail.

One more thing — one mile of walking at 3 MPH burns 75-100 calories. Even the most out of shape person can easily walk 3 miles. Start there and soon you’ll be walking 15 miles or more at 4 MPH. It’s the best low impact exercise though it does take time when you start racking up crazy distances. After a 12 mile walk you can eat a pint of Ben & Jerrys and it’ll be a wash (this is after you reach your desired weight). 3 hours for the walk, 15 minutes to eat the pint. Oh well.

  144. Om!
Jeez that’s scary. Guess we’re not 26 anymore 😉 Please rest up and when you’re better I’ll jump on the program with you so we’re assured some balance… the hours you put in is enough to make anyone ill.

I’m here to do whatever to help. Call me when you’re up to it.
    Donna

  145. I am very happy to hear that you are on your way to a full recovery. Hearing news like this really makes you want to take a look at how you live your own life. I hope to follow your lead into a healthier lifestyle. Good luck on the road to recovery!

  146. Hi Om:

I hope your recovery is going well. I know that you come back better than ever. I miss your blog posts but please take the time to get better and do no rush it on anyone’s account.

    Shannon

  147. Om-

We are here for you and thinking of you always. Seems like just a couple of days ago we were all together toasting the upcoming year at GigaOm. Just think, the hardest part of giving up the smokes has already past by…I know you are going to be fine and this is simply a small blip in the road.
    Liann

  148. Om

Sorry to hear this news but glad to hear that you are on the mend. Am sure the Tandooriloin Paki joints can make heart-friendly versions of your favorite foods.

Here is to a healthy 2008

    Kamini

  149. get well Om.

Sh’eesh– a heart attack at 41!? & you prob’ly thought this blogging thing was going to be a low stress gig, huh?

  150. 🙁 Get better soon!

Not to be morbid, but for those of us who worry about heart health, can you tell us what it was like? Or rather what made you realize it was time to go to the hospital?

  151. Om,
Us desi’s are the most prone to heart problems.

I hope 2008 brings healthier times.

    Sincerely,
    Vijay + VSC team

  152. Hi Om,

Really sorry to hear about your heart attack last week – it’s a reminder we all have to watch it. Glad to hear that your better; had hoped to meet you last month at LeWeb3, but didn’t end up crossing paths with you.

Most important thing is now, to rest and fully recover – and, fortunately, Blogging is something, when you feel up to it, you can do, even in bed.

Enjoy reading your posts and deep analysis, esp of Telecom …and I want to keep on reading your stuff.

So, rest well, and you’ll be better soon – and even better than before.

  153. Just catching up with the news for the first time today, and OMG I see this. Hang in there Friend, we need you :-). Happy New Year, get better soon and we’ll see you in the next couple of weeks.

  154. If you let me know what hospital you are in, I could stop by and talk –
I’ve been hospitalized, and know how miserable it can be trying to find
    ways to fill time.

A fully and speedy recovery, my friend. Please let me know if there is
    ANYTHING I can do!

    Jonathan

  155. wow. get well soon man. Speaking from experience times like these make one realize how fantastic every moment of life is – it will only get better from here – get well soon brother.

  156. Hi Om,

Sorry to hear about this news. I have been an avid reader for years, and your work has helped inspire my own blog over at http://www.marketing.fm. I am proud to say that I refer your articles to many people and I wish you a speedy road to recovery. Know that you have fans out there who are sending you best wishes.

    ~Eric

  157. Hi Om,

Glad to see you doing well. Health is the most important thing, we all (family, friends, fan and community) need you…

    Take care of yourself…

    -abdul

  158. Om, So glad to hear you’re doing ok. Just want to wish you you a speedy recovery and a healthier 2008!
    – D

  159. Dear Om,

Get well soon. I have learned so much from you. We all need you. I have been glued to the office chair myself, transitioning from IT in a big organization to life in the wilds of the Internet. I watched my waste expand in the process. We all have to strike a balance. Yesterday I bought “Perfect Pushup”; its not much but its the kind of exercise you can do between every 5 emails or 200 lines of code. Being a classic yo-yo with my health and weight, I know the secret is calisthenics and diet. Be healthy Om. -Travell

  160. Om, you’ve got enough well wishes, so I’d like to take it one step further by giving you some great eating ideas. Specifically, switch over to a Greek/Mediterranean diet and your taste buds won’t skip a beat as your heart mends. Some of my favourites:

    Breakfast – Greek Toast

2 slices of multi-grain toast. Spread 1/2 teaspoon of olive oil onto each + a sprinkling of crumbled feta cheese and oregano. You’ll love it and the decaf coffee will go down easier. Better yet, a nice bottle of water.

    OR

natural yogurt + fresh honey. Filling, healthy and sweet. Honey burns quickly.

    Lunch

Greek Salad (tomatoes, cucumbers, green peppers, onions and a couple of olives) + grilled chicken breast. Virgin olive oil, balsamic vinegar and oregano on the salad (skip the feta if you already had a Greek toast in the morning). Freshly squeezed lemon for the chicken breast.

    Dinner

Grilled/baked Salmon topped with freshly squeezed lemon. Serve with 1-2 sliced tomatoes topped with olive oil and oregano. 1 glass of red wine.

    Hope you like the menu!

    Regards,
    George

  161. Get well soon bud,

But that is what will happen to “fat fucs.” , you blog too much, take a break from the blog and the food, go exercise.

Exercise thats what its called. Am sad to see the state of you guys in the US, you health (which is your greatest wealth) doesn’t mean a thing to you.

Exercise, get up from around the computer and off the chair, walk do something fat fuc..

Exercise, leave the Mcdonalds and the steak and exercise..

Get a personal trainer and pledge to loose some fat, you fat fuc.

    Get well fat fuc.

    Best wishes

  162. Get well soon. If you ever find yourself in the San Diego area, drop me a line and we can go surfing. Great exercise, and good for the stress level. Peace.

  163. Om — am thinking of you and sending lots of good wishes! Let’s take a walk together in 2008.

    Best,
    Joanna P.

  164. Om,

My heart sank when I read this post. I’m glad you’re on your way to a speedy recovery. Best wishes in your new and improved lifestyle!

    Tim

  165. I am sure you will get through this.

One you feel the craving for cigarretes, scotch or anything else just take a deep breath, close your eyes and try to figure out where does the universe starts and where does it ends 😉

  167. Hey Om – just heard the news earlier today. I hope you’re feeling better and best of luck on the recovery. Getting rid of the booze and the cigarettes, no problem…but decaf?? Ouch 🙂 Seth

  168. Om, While I was dismayed to hear about your heart attack I’m so glad to hear you take such a upbeat tone in this post. It sounds as if the good doctors and the rest of the dear people in your life have taken things well and firmly in hand.

But please reconsider just one part of the plan. If I could just plant a celery stick amidst a pile of frozen peas in my bra in your honor it would do my heart good. It’s more blessed to give than receive even when it comes to good natured ribbing in the guise of providing endorphin-releasing smiles to recovering patients of all stripes, right?

Apparently our jobs now involve giving our respective illnesses hell and treat ourselves better than we have in the past. I’m in the process of learning how to do that, and hope you’ll help me celebrate many long and healthy years observing the better days that are sure to come after Christmas week 2007!

    Susan

  169. Get better Om!! Reading this really shook me up. Try to relax a little, and get your great team to write more for you… Again, all my wishes for a prompt recovery.

  170. Hey Om

Wish you a speedy recovery. With some much expected in Jan 2008 (Macworld and CES) we don’t wanna miss your perspectives!

  171. Hi Om

Just read this. I’m in Cape Town with the family enjoying a post-edgeio break.

Wow! I’m relieved you sound OK. Must have been a big scare.

Take it easy, recover and get back into it slowly.

    All the very best

  173. Om, I’ve been following your work for a while now. Saw you speak at Startupschool a couple years ago and read your Business 2.0 articles well before that. Your words are always insightful and entertaining, and I hope to see you back in the saddle soon.

    God Bless,
    Joe

  174. Dear Om:
Sorry to hear the news. Get well soon. Take care of your health. I guess a good health is what will keep you positive at all times. Our wishes are always with you. Get rid of that god damn cigar. I was a smoker myself for a longtime. Glad I quit smoking.

    Cheers,
    Ravi

  175. Om,
I don’t know you personally, that doesn’t matter.

I know your circumstance, and I wish you the best.

    Love, steve

  176. Om-

Love the blog, and the show, and your past work in B2.0, too. You have the vision and the insight that keeps us all coming back for more, so like, we’re your junkies and we’ll be needing more stuff, real bad!

Take care of yourself, and, for what it’s worth, I am personally taking this as a cautionary tale, and will be making changes in the hopes of precluding the same thing happening to me.

    Your (currently) brother in flubber,

    DaveA

  177. Glad to hear you’re recovering well, Om. And great that your family is there to support you. Sounds like you’ve got your priorities straight, so take your time and don’t rush things.

  178. Om, wishing you all the best of recoveries and a happy, healthy 2008. You’ll be back soon typing out marathon-session posts and cranking it up with Dvorak. Positive thoughts and best wishes from all of us at HydraMedia.

  179. Om, I hope you recover very quickly. Sadly, I know at least 3 other friends under 40 who also went through this. Let’s start a facebook group to bring more awareness to this issue, and maybe help improve our too often overworked unhealthy lifestyles in the Valley.

  180. Om, I was shocked to hear about your heart attack, but very happy to hear you’re making a full recovery. Wish you all the best in health and happiness in 2008!

  181. Oh my goodness Om, what a scare that must have been!

At the risk of making light of a very serious situation, they do say that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. I find that we all get small messages about things we need to change in our lives every day that increase in magnitude and severity the longer we ignore them.

The beauty of this is that you will now put your health as a priority, which will benefit us all. We need you around in the long run!

Sending good healing thoughts from here in Arizona, and best wishes to you and your family for a revitalized, healthy and happy New Year.

    All the best,

    -Pam

  182. Take care of yourself Om! It’s a shame that something this drastic had to happen before you started living healthy but at least you are now 🙂

  183. Get well soon! you’re a celebrity, you made the front page of Digg. Something I will never do failing a horrific accident involving a goat, a nun, vaseline, and a pack of wild cats.

But seriously, I know these things are life changers, I’ve had my own recent ones. OMG I miss sugar. Good luck.

  184. You are the down to earth bad boy of business! I don’t know if I can handle you going soft Om!

Just kidding, keep on track to a healthier you. Just don’t lose your bad boy edge. Consider leather jackets?

    Keep on shining,

    BSG

  185. HI Om,

Wishing you best of luck for a speedy recovery.

  186. Wish you all the best for 2008 Om…
Hope you get well soon: I miss your unique way of writing stories and your beautiful socks in the Gigaom Show 😉

  187. Damn…I hope you take drastic measures to eat good food, to exercise and to put all positive changes on your side. Best of luck, Om, I guess this was a good warning for you to change entirely your attitude with your health and life.

  188. Get Well Soon Om. All the best and take care of yourself.

On a sidenote I would say if you have heared of Pranayam (a form of Yoga) would be better to try and make it a happbit(of course not immediately – only after full recovery).

  189. Om, a little late in getting here but I wanted to wish you nothing but a speedy recovery, my friend. If there’s anything you need, please let me know. – steve

  190. Om

Wishing you the best, you add a lot to our live and industry, and hope to see you have a fast recovery.

It’s certainly time to clean up that living! Glad you’re doing it now. I cut out smokes and caffeine from my life!

  191. Dear Om,

we enjoyed so much our dinner in Paris and where were shocked hearing the news here in australia. Please get well again! All the best wishes from Daniela & Lars

  192. om, all the best to you!

dont underestimate the impact and the joy of good nutrition. its all just a matter of what and how we’re used to eat.

  193. Dear Om,

Very sorry to hear of your predicament, and hope for a full and speedy recovery.

It’s been a while since those days in Palo Alto………

  194. Om,

I was very sorry to hear your news – must have been all that fine wine and expensive cheese in Paris.

Take care of yourself, and I hope you’re back on your feet soon.

  195. Om, please take care. I am in Mumbai and you are our window to the web 2.0 world . No more samosas , scotch and smoke for you. have more sunshine , shores and smiles….

  196. Om,
I have also made a change in my lifestyle. I am going to the gym now and gave up the twinkies.

  198. Om,
You are in our thoughts. I got to know you through the ‘Cranky Geeks’ podcast and I find your wisdom and insight to be invaluable. Please take care of yourself—the world is better with you in it.

  199. Best wishes on a speedy recovery. Miss your valuable insights but your very capable staff is doing a superb job in your absence.

  200. Om,

Take care of yourself and best wishes for a speedy recovery. You can’t leave us yet, need to be around so you can cover my first IPO!!!

    RH

  201. Om, take care of yourself first… you’re what’s important.

I had to make similar changes about 6 weeks ago. I’m overweight, didn’t take care of myself, worked long stressful hours + I’m a Dad to a supercharged almost 2yr old. This resulted in high BP and an irregular heart beat.

Beleive me, that’s all the warning I wanted to even know about. I hired a trainer and now my family comes first, my workouts second and then if I have time for blogging great, if not, great.

  202. Om

Sorry to hear you had a heart attack.
    Wishing you a prompt recovery.

Gives me something to think about for my ‘Just over 50 and not Dead yet’ panel at ‘South by Southwest’…Smarter and Healthier?

I didn’t realise that the cricket was that important to you. The Aussies won’t always be on top 😉

  205. Get Well Om! In the long run be thankful this was a wake up call as opposed to a good night. Take care of yourself and I look forward to reading and watching the new and improved GigaOM!!!

  206. Happy New Year Om! Get well soon, best wishes from Romania!
(BTW – “Om” means “Human” in romanian 🙂 )

  207. Om-

Hurry up and get better– wishing you positive energy from NYC.

    re: switching to Decaf
I weaned myself off coffee in 2007 and am now hooked on Trader Joe’s Green and White Iced Tea which I buy by the (literally) gallon.

Everyone needs vices, I’m trying to choose better as well. Feel better, brother.

    best,
    ace

  208. Om,

See how much you are needed, so many well wishers!!!

I wish you all the best for a speedy recovery, and will be joining you in the clean living stakes for 2008 onwards.

    Take care of yourself 🙂

  209. My partner quit smoking after 35 years. He was one of those guys who loved loved his cigarettes. He read a book by Allan Carr called “the easy way to stop smoking” (read the small version not the large). While it took him 4 months to read the final page he quit the next day and hasn’t gone back (5 years ago). It wasn’t just a help for his smoking but a call to action to change many things health wise in his life. It might be helpful to you as you go through it…..best wishes for a happy and healthy 2008 🙂

  210. do doctors now a days also recomend staying away from high stress stuff? for sports guys it’s just games….for tech guys it’s games and stuff like macwold and ces keynotes….take care, and ihope you get better soon

  211. Take care of yourself Om!
GigaOm is one of our favorite podcasts. We wish you the best and keep up the good work!

  212. My best wishes for your early and complete recovery. I am Anne’s father and also one of your most devoted readers.

  213. Hi Om,

I just heard from a friend about your heart attack. I’m sorry to hear it, and hope you’re back on the street very soon.

All the best for 2008 and onwards,

    Stephan

  214. Get well, Om. Most of us are taught to make ourselves replaceable, but you’ve failed. You aren’t. The blogosphere needs you.

Get well soon and do take good care of yourself. 🙂

    cheers (non-alcoholic),
    Gopal

  215. Om, get some much deserved rest. No more Tube rides for you; next trip to London we walk back to the hotel. See you soon.

  216. Om,

Health…Family…Job…in that order. This was an important lesson I learned in business more years ago than I’d like to admit. It has served me well personally and with those that I work with.

As I tip my single-malt to you (I will never give it up) I wish you a speedy recovery and a happy, healthy New Year!

  217. Glad to hear you made it.

May your recovery be speedy, and may your new, healthy vices be at least as satisfying as your old ones.

    -Paul

  218. Glad to hear you’re on your way back to better health, Om. This makes me regret loaning you 4 or 5 smokey treats during breaks at NewTeeVee Live.

    Get well soon.

  219. Wish you full and deep recovery, and sooner than later 😉 I hope it was just earlier bell than anything that serious, so you will take it serious and find alternative path in lifestyle with even better performance.

  220. I had 4 way bypass 5+ years ago. Life does get better. Listen to your doctor. Get some exercise and love life more than you every have before.
    Get well soon….

  221. Om, best wishes. Hope to read more from you soon.
But remember this will take some time, i. e. your recovery. So, take it easy. Make it a routine to get out and move (on your feet). But do not over do it while fresh out of the hospital, it takes time to build a mental and physical model of what your body can do. As they say, running is 80% mental strength and 20% physical strength. So give your poor body some time to catch up to your mental capabilities.

  222. Om, best wishes for a fast recovery. Glad that you have plenty of people to help you get through this, and lots of fans to send good healing vibes your way.

  223. Om, hope you’re already feeling better and best wishes for a full recovery. Take care – we’re all looking forward to your insights for a long time to come.

  224. hey om, accepting visitors today? love to swing b during the tail end of the afternoon… take care mate! >b

  225. Om, get well soon.

Please ask your doctor/dietician/nutritionist about “Omega-3 Esters”. They’re a specific form of fatty acids that significantly reduce the chance of heart complications. After a few years of research, I’ve found X-tend Life to be the best brand on the market.

This form of omega-3 is absorbed more slowly over time providing more consistent protection than other forms such as triglycerides.

Please ask your doctor. It’s one of THE best changes you can make to your diet, period.

    Cheers,
    Stace

  226. Om, I wish you a fast and speedy recovery. Don’t be blogging from bed now. Those are some good resolutions. I’m glad your friends and family are helping.

  227. Om, you almost gave me a heart attack hearing you had a heart attack. Best wishes for a speedy recovery and please, take care. Your blog and show have been invaluable resources. We love the work you do and hope you will continue once you are fully recovered. Thank you for being who you are and stay well.

  228. Om,

Just heard. Our wishes are with you for a speedy recovery. Looking forward to seeing you again up and at ’em…

    Joe and Carolyn

  229. Om: I think many of us are running too fast and hard trying to keep up with the pace of technology so thank goodness you got a wake up call that gives you a solid second chance. You have a fantastic team and obviously tons of support so I wish you the best as you focus on healing and changing your life to be healthy and strong. If you steep it long enough, green tea takes on the smoky flavor of scotch 🙂

  230. Om – sending you speedy recovery wishes. I got the orders to get moving 10 years ago after a serious illness, and that’s when I started swing dancing. I highly recommend it as the only exercise that’s actually fun.

  231. Om,

Only just seen this – very sorry to hear about it.

Best wishes for a full recovery and most importantly, take care of yourself!

    cheers,
    Nick

  232. Om,

my best wishes are with you man, get well soon! I quit my every now and then smoking at New Years Eve too, so next time we’ll just meet for a decaf 🙂 Glad you got out of it that well, take good care of yourself from now on!

    Cheers, Frederik

Wish you a speedy recovery, for a tech-news junkie like me, your views, coverage and the simplicity of the message has been highly invaluable.

    Rajeev

  234. Happy New Year. Happy to hear that you are feeling better and on the road to recovery. Good luck…..

    Cheers,
    Hemel.

  235. Hi Om,

Wow, that’s a shocker, definitely not a fun way to spend the holiday season. I wish you fast and speedy recovery…

Now to find some safe indulgences to substitute — herbal tea?

    Warm regards,

    • jonathan.
  236. Don’t worry Om. You will be perfectly alright and all the wishes from your family, friends and strangers like myself, are with you.
Take this time to rest and relax, you will be fine.

    Regards,
    Sadish

Glad to hear you are doing better. I hope 2008 turns out to be a great year for you!

    God Bless You!

    Toledo Dave

  238. Om, please get well soon. As my grandma always says “do everything in life moderately and you will be just fine”. Stick to your resolutions and keep writing those witty articles that we all love. All the best and a healthy new year.

  239. Dude, now you’re going to need to cultivate a whole new set of vices. What a pity because you were so good at all the old ones… 😉 Much love, C

  240. Wow man that’s heavy. Get well soon! I hope all these messages make you feel better about having so many people out there who appreciate what you do. Happy ’08!

  241. Wow man that’s heavy. Get well soon! I hope all these messages make you feel better about having so many people out there who appreciate what you do. Happy ‘08!

  242. Om – You need to get back soon. If not you, who’s going to scold me for sending an embargoed release!? Get well.

    David Glaubke

  243. Om,

We all need your wit and wisdom. So, here’s to a speedy recovery and great health this year and next year and…

    Scott

  244. Just heard — greatly enjoy your coverage and wish you the best. Here’s to a speedy recovery and successfully modifying the dietary habits.

  245. Omie,
Glad to hear you’re on recovery road and are editing out the heart-stopping elements of your life. What about the workaholism? Daria, Ennio, Ophelia, and I send good wishes your way. Take care of yourself. Jon

  246. good luck! my father-in-law went through the same exact scenario as you and had a stent put in. later the same night he looked rosy cheeked and full of life, and within weeks looked healthier than ever. he has learned to love his decaf and it’s been three blessed new years for him (also, sans smokes, cold turkey per dr’s orders).

  247. Om,

SO SO sorry to hear this, but thank goodness you are ok! Best wishes on a speedy recovery. Take care of your self my man!

  248. Dude,

Really glad to hear you are okay. Our next drink will definitely have to be a decaf tea at Bucks not keg beer in the mission.

Take care and please let me know if I can help with anything.

    -Matt

  249. Om – bounce back soon, and I’ll buy you a nonfat decaf soy latte at your favorite Starbucks (providing the thought of it doesn’t cause you to relapse).

  250. Om,

Wishing you a very healthy 2008. If you have time to rest and recover now, I’d recommend these two books: “The way of the peaceful warrior” and “the monk who sold his Ferrari”. Get well soon!

    Eze

  251. Om,

I was shocked and saddened to hear about your heart attack, but glad to hear you are doing better. I really enjoy your blogs as well as your NewTeeVee Pier showings. We’ve met a few times, but you probably don’t remember me – I’m a friend of Joanne Wan. Best of luck to you in your recovery!!!

    John

  252. Om,

Very happy you are recovering. Take a good care of yourself and get well rapidly! See you soon

    Beatrice

  253. Here’s to a speedy recovery…and to adopting the “everything in moderation” mantra. Glad your wake up call was not more serious…

Best from all of us at Eastwick

  254. Om, thankful that you are now doing ok. GigaOm readers will now want not only your valley news/views but also a journal of your diet/exercise habits. So better make the journal public. You know we love you too much and will find a way to keep tabs on you! Get well soon – Prashanth

  255. Om — I just heard the awful news. I hope you’re relaxing and on your way to recovery. My thoughts are with you. Until we meet again…rest and relax kid. -Jim

  256. I was saddened to hear the news, but thankful you have the opportunity to show the world you are here to stay. You are a true gem and all us look forward to your speedy recovery! Kristin Kiltz

  257. Om,
That was Nature’s wake up call. It’s nothing for anyone to be sorry or depressed about..it’s just cause and effect. My sincere hope is that you will soon be able to establish a new “Fit for Life”campaign with a focus on daily aerobic exercise including some variety in it so it doesn’t get too oppressive and will, therefore, be sustainable. The nutritional component is also important–but again doesn’t have to be all that spartan. Finally, there’s the managing of one’s mental state component. I keep coming back to this blog to keep my own Type A tendencies in check: http://feeds.feedburner.com/zenhabits

I know all of this advice from your doctors, your family and friends and all of us well-wishers who know you through your writings must sound like you are about to be sentenced to a life devoid of pleasure, but it doesn’t really have to be like that at all.

I am confident that you will be able, through sheer force of personality, to triumph over this temporary setback.
Best wishes for this next phase of your life!
    Scott

  258. Om,

I spent some time in the hospital in 2007 and as bad as that was, stay focused on life on the outside. It’ll take a little bit to get there, but there’s better days ahead.

Take care and we’ll all be here when you’re ready to come back.

    Snake

  259. Om,

Sorry to hear the news. I read your site daily and my heart sunk when I heard the news. Felt like a family member was sick. Anyway, good to hear you will be OK and I am looking forward to you getting back to your normal self. Let me know if I can help in any way.

    • Doug K.
  260. Get well soon Om. I would start slow and only give up the fatty foods first. Then if necessary stop with the scotch and cigars.
Unless the doctor insists on cold turkey on all three.

All the best with the recovery,
    Jeb

Om, best wishes…sneak in a spicy, low-fat curry every once in a while, though -)

  262. Dear Om

Everyone wishes you a speedy recovery. May you get well soon enough. I am waiting desperately to see you once against introducing Joyce Kim

  263. Wishing you a speedy recovery!! Take your time, though and follow your Doc’s lifestyle change recommendations. We need you around soon and for many years to come.

After you get back on your feet, you or your family can ping me and I’ll give you free access to MedBillManager to help sort out and easily manage all of the medical bills and insurance EOBs that will soon flood your mailbox. It’s the least I can do in return for all of the countless hours of insight and entertainment you’ve provided me.

    To good health!

  264. Om, get well wishes to you!! I am a good friend of Mike Sly’s and obviously seen from almost 900 responses, you have a lot of loyal, wonderful friends and fans. I look forward to meeting into 2008.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

    aka “Q”

  265. Hey Om
I’m glad to hear that you’re okay and recovering. No argument that you’re one of the best in the industry, but please take care of yourself. Life is too short. Here is to a happy and healthy 2008.

    Best wishes,
    Jeannette

  266. Really sorry to hear the news, Om. So glad to hear you’ve managed so well and that you’ll be ok. Just letting you know my thoughts are with you and wanted to wish you all the best for an easy recovery. You can’t rush these things, and doctor’s orders sounds like the best medicine possible.

    All the best, Om,
    Jon

  268. Om I’m so glad to hear that your are doing better. I hope you have a speedy recovery. Does this mean you won’t be able to be on Cranky Geeks anymore? We don’t want to raise your blood pressure or anything. 🙂

    -rohit

  270. Look after yourself Om, you are a legend, and I look foward to seeing you on Cranky Geeks or Twit, and of course the Giga Om Show !!

  271. Very sad when I heard it, and surprised that you are only 41. Looks like you lived your life to the fullest.

    Get well soon.

  272. Om,

This is Andrew from TheSportsTV.com, we had a brief conversation about you love of sports at the NewTeeVee Pier 39 screening during the Super Nova conference week in the summer. You talked about how when you lived in NYC the Yankees and baseball helped you become better connected to the city and American culture.

I wish you a speedy recover and a recommendation to read a recent New York Times Bestseller book that would be very relevant to read called, “YOUNGER NEXT YEAR” – Live strong, fit, and sexy – until you’re 80 & Beyond, by Chris Cowley and Henry S. Lodge, M.D.

    Best of luck!

    Andrew

  273. Hey Om,

Take care of yourself! Just quitting alcohol may make a huge difference, and it’s not as hard as one may think. I’m talking from experience here.

    Get well soon,

    –Tristan
(Mozilla Europe, we’ve met at Mozilla HQ a few months ago).

  274. Sorry to hear about the heart attack, but glad everything looks good for a full recovery.

In your friend’s zeal to rid your life of everything healthy, life ins’t just tofu and granola.

Hang onto at least one vice (my personal favorite is chocolate).

Get better soon. All the best in 2008

  275. Hi Om,

    Get well.

You aren’t the first, and you won’t be the last founder of a high-pressured start-up to get a heart attack, and your work is in media and technology -so remember to delegate.

Enjoy life and don’t let it rush past.

    Yours kindly,

    Shakir Razak

  276. Dear Om – Glad to hear that you are recovering. This epidemic of heart disease in young South Asians is brutal and relentless. When you feel better connect with us – we are a non-profit primary and secondary prevention program focused on this very same issue. In the meantime, take care, and alert all your South Asian friends to get screened now! They can prevent an event that’s lurking in their near future starting today.
    Best,
    -Ashish

  277. Om!
You scared the crap out of us. Phew! Thank god you could walk in and get immediate care.
This could turn out to be the kind of scare that turns you into a health freak, which is what you need to make up for all that fun body abuse.
Take care, get better and we send our love for a speedy recovery.
Enjoy the down time as much as you can.
    Love,
    Susan Bratton

  278. Hi Om, I am so glad to hear you are recovering well. I’m not sure if you remember me, but I’m the gal that was blogging from a Phuket hospital about the Indian Ocean tsunami nearly 3 years ago to the date of your heart attack. You referenced my blog posts a few times during the midst of that global tragedy.

That was a mighty close brush with death for me too. But it was also a much needed (in hindsight) wake-up call.

Where seemingly an outsider would assume that one just gets “back in the saddle” and continues on with their plans for January (given some mourning time for the hundreds of thousands in my case, recovery in yours)…or maybe February or perhaps March then. Yet it was a life-altering pivot point – a discontinuity if you will – and there was no picking up where I left off. My life has taken me in surprising directions since then, and life is so much more precious and ALIVE if that makes sense on a day to day moment to moment basis. I’ve journeyed interior and exterior places I wouldn’t have contemplated without that little ‘shove’.

Coming close to death changes one – consider allowing it. I was told by some wise counselors about “post-traumatic growth” – meaning that PTSD isn’t evitable by survivors, in fact, quite a few people radically alter and catapult their lives in extraordinary ways after a major accident, illness, or trauma. (For instance, read “It’s Not About the Bike” by Lance Armstrong if you doubt.)

This is what I wish for you. That this (albeit forced) time off gives you a stunning opportunity to taste life at a whole new level and act directly from your heart – literally.

    Namaste.

(p.s. My email should you want to chat is a gmail account with words Crossroads Dispatches – and that’s written without the spaces.)

  279. Dear Om:

Myself, Nicole, Paul and the rest of the MobiTV team wanted to let you know we’re thinking of you and hoping for your speedy recovery! Now go relax!

    Best Wishes,
Jason Taylor and All Your Friends at MobiTV, Inc.

  280. To a good man (your goodness shines through your writing) and one of the best telco/Internet analysts – may God bless you with a speedy an complete recovery!

  281. Oh OM! Please get well soon. You are the lighthouse in the stormy dark world of too much information I can’t live without!

  282. OM, screw it…go for the scotch, what’s another 5-10 years of being misable and healthy, lift your glass up high and be happy for another 2 years

  283. My good friend and business colleague has gone through a similar situation in October. He has made a 180 degree change in his lifestyle and is seeing great results and is feeling more energetic. He is also much happier. Get well and all the best for 2008.

  284. Om, woh movie – “Final detination” dekhi hai? Yaar, koi nahin dekh lena agar nahin dekha ho tau. Sabko jana hota hai! kissi ko jaldi padi rehti hai, Koi late jata hai… lekin ek din jana tau, sabko hai bhai!

Koi nahin, phir kabhie. Ab chal rona dhauna choda ..aur mauj kar!! 🙂

  285. Om,

It’s shocking to see, was just wondering what happened after episode 22 of the Show.

I am glad that you are recovering well.

    Smoke-Drink-FattyFoods a No NO NOOOOOOOOOOOO000ooooo from now on… ok… promise me that.

FreshAir-Water-Salads will be a Yesssssssssssssss from now on 🙂

    Viren

  286. Dear Om, I was shocked to hear the news and hope you are doing better. I’ve been on a heart attack alert for years now given family history, poor cholesterol and the fact that people from our part of the world tend to be more prone to heart disease….I’m glad you have so much support and that you are focusing on a healthier lifestyle. Best wishes to you. Would love to talk to you soon.

    Nikhil

  287. Hi Om, I too spent Dec 28th in ER. My lungs weren’t letting me breathe and I had my first major asthma attack ever, after being diagnosed with asthma several months ago. It was pretty scary. I’m sure we shared similar emotions that day.

Thanks for all your hard work with GigaOm. I read it almost everyday. And I cherish it and everything else in life — such as a breath of air or a beat of the heart! — a little bit more now.

  288. Om, you are in my thoughts and hopes and prayers.

I wish you a smooth and easy recovery, and hope this early warning will lead to a healthier 2008 and beyond.

Your (more frequent) words will be missed in the weeks ahead, but you will be ever foremost on the minds of the people who adore you, who are more, no doubt, that you can count.

    Warmly,

    Dina

  289. I wish you the best, and can not wait till you are up and running again!! Hope you will come back to your writing, and also your podcast show. Take care!!

  290. My Friend,

For all of us during our time on earth, there comes a time to sow…and a time to reap…

While your readers (me included) would sorely miss you; your health and life are worth far more to your family, other loved ones, and us readers and supporters than your continued heavy involvement in running GigaOm.

Is it time to reap the wonderful company you’ve built?

Best wishes for a swift recovery.

    Steve

  291. Om – Glad to hear your doing well. I’ve been a regular at your blog for over 2 years now and have benefited tremendously from your insights. Get well soon. Good luck and God bless!

  292. Om,

Belatedly, I’m very sorry to hear about your heart attack but am happy to hear that you’re taking the required time to recover properly and will be OK. Best wishes for the new year. Looking forward to working with a healthier Om, and your team, in ’08.

    Best,

    Steve

    Steve Kaufman

  293. Omygod!

I always had you down as the next (and dare I say greatest) Bond villain, I only hope the celery doesn’t soften you up too much and prevent you from delivering that deadly bon mot ‘voice over internet protocol Mr Bond?’.

    Wishing you all the best.

    Adam & Fat Men

  294. Hey Om,

Sorry to hear about the tough time. Going through something similar actually. The blessing here is that we both have a second chance to make things right health-wise. It sounds like you have a lot of support, but if you need a partner on the same health warpath in the Bay Area. Let me know.

    -BIGmike

  295. A friend passed a story to me titled “How did you like your heart attack?” You are re prioritizing your life, spending more time with your family, deciding what is flotsam and what is really and truly important in your life and taking better care of yourself. “But I thought I was going to die.” “You will, just not today, so how do you like the results of your heart attack?” Get well soon and have fun in the refocusing.

  296. Om, our thoughts are with you for the strength and fortitude to get past this episode stronger and more healthy than ever. We are there for you.

    Andy Plesser

  297. Om:

Glad to hear that you’ve been given a second chance on life, and I wish you the best during your recovery.

    Frank

  298. I hope you have a fully and speedy recovery.

My father died of a heart attack on Dec 28th, so this is very close to home. I am glad that God has given you a chance to recover.

  305. Om,
Honey, you gotta take care of yourself. We need you around here and you better get it together! I find I always take my health for granted until something happens — one realizes not much is worthwhile if one isnt healthy. Hope to see you soon, and my prayers and positive energy are with you. Sabrina

  306. Get well soon, Om! Balancing life’s pleasures with life’s risks can be a challenge, but “living” in the most natural sense (ie., breathing) takes precedence over everything else. 😉

  307. Hi OP!!!

    Wow!
Oye pape! Tu ki karda hai yaar! Tenu kya si main ki overeating te oversmoking na kiya kar.

I wish you well and a speedy recovery. And I hope to see you running a marathon soon. Take Care.

Glad to hear you are on the road to recovery. Rest up and get well soon.

  313. Om, good to hear you are on the mend. I got on the “healthy eating” stuff about 2 years ago, at first it sounded awful, but I’ve got to tell you, after a few weeks you won’t miss all the bad food you used to eat and you’ll feel great.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

  314. Om,
My best wishes for a speedy recovery. It’s like the catastrophe when you think your hard drive is dying and you have no backup. Luckily sometimes they are able to extract and save the data from the drive. At that moment you feel a huge sense of relief. You are very lucky, we all are very lucky you are still here. Make sure you work at staying here.

  315. Om,

I read your blog everyday. I was shocked to hear about the news. It makes you realize how we take our lives for granted. It made me stop and think about you, myself and life in general…

I’ll keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Get well soon. And please take care of yourself.

    -Chandan

  316. Om, I am so relieved to hear that you have been recovering well. I hope our holiday coffee meeting had nothing to do with it. I am so so glad that someone up there is watching for you over the holidays. Stay healthy and stay fit in 2008 – that’s a New Year resolution for all of us!

    Best Regards!!!
    Jack

  317. Get well soon, Om!

Re your hope that your readers will take care of our health too – I posted an entry about your new year’s resolutions at my blog.

    Thanks for sharing your story.

  318. Same holiday blues we had, Om!

Getting no love from work with threatened axe this month, spent all our savings because of our daughter’s condition, and whatever little we had again went as payment for hospital bills. Been like that for the third straight year of a lifetime of treatment and possible emergencies that takes not just money but more so energy and time.

Know what? Even though I do get deflated, just knowing that everything’s for my lil imp of a daughter, i’m comfortable with what I have. And I will just keep on going. Our lives aren’t hopeless, just a bit different. That’ fine by me.

Enjoy the forced RnR, Om! Stay focused on what’s present for now.

  319. OM,
Get well soon.Try some light “Breathing Exercise” – Yoga , to keep away from the stick&bottle!!!
    Deepu

  320. Take care and get well soon Om! Blogging can wait as the first wealth is health.

Thanks again for sharing your wealth of knowledge.

  321. Om, your insight will be missed. My father in law just suffered a heart attack. My thoughts are with you and your family. I wish you a speedy recovery and a long life of health!

  322. Om,

I am another devoted reader of your blog (and a former journalist). I am so sorry to hear about this but second chances in life are a great gift. I hope you have a full and speedy recovery.

  323. Very glad you get to recover with the care of family and friends. Hope that you keep-up with your new year’s resolutions. I can see from the number of posts you have hordes of followers globally. We will call it the OM phenomenon !

  325. Dear Om,
    Please take care of yourself…

On a lighter note: You were all over the Indian media, specially for your health conditions, there were stories about blogging, social media being very stressful. I am a aspiring social media catalyst, the day this news was published i had to pretend to sleep early because, my parents were worried about my health and now one of friends have also created a diet plan for me…

  326. It’s wonderful that you’re on the road to a full recovery. Glad you’re going to be ok. But please listen to your doctor. We want you around for a long time. 🙂

Take it easy, don’t rush. We’ll all be here when you get back. Your health is more important to us and it’s our number one priority.

  327. Hi OP,
Heard from D what you went through and felt pretty sad. Another friend of mine (in the stock market), of your age went through the same agony in December. I hope you finally wake up now & take giving up smoking & drinking seriously..As you also know, no health, no blogging. Pls. spare your mom of the experience of seeing you in pain. On a positive note, you got some good coverage in the Indian press of your blog.
Good luck and have a healthy 2008 and see you soon in Mumbai.
    Pankaj

  328. Om, best wishes. I’m a regular viewer of GigaOM (and all the other Revision3 shows!) and really enjoy the show. Now you know this is all because you never let Joyce introduce herself, don’t you? hehe. Seriously though, I hope you have a quick recovery and enjoy the new diet the doctors recommend for you. I’m trying to start out the new year a little healthier myself. It’s tough maintaining a healhty living when you’re sitting at a keyboard all day, but this event just shows the importance of a healthy lifestyle. Best wishes.

  329. OM, as in O’My God! Shock and my best, best wishes are sent your way. Let me join the hoards who wish you well. Ah, the mechanics of living. You have the writing down, but what must you master now? Yoga? Big hug for next time I see you, xoVivian

  330. Best wishes from a reader in Brazil. First, adopt healthier habits and come back to writing ! I’m waiting to see you in Revision3’s The GigaOM Show.

  331. Get well soon, Om. And do take special care of that heart. This community needs your sound advice and guidance. However, I hope you will take a break once in a while to stop and smell those roses!

  332. My dad’s last cigarette was to see if it could help him get rid of that strange pain in his arm and chest. His heart is all well now 15 years later. Best wishes for a continued recovery.

  333. Dear Om,

Shiva from Chennai, India. You are THE influential writer who has inspired me to start connecting. I have been following your writings everywhere since a year. I pray that you recover first to 100%. Writing should be later when its ok, I am sure when you do return to writing, there will be a different and enjoyable touch to your writing which you will observe then.

  334. Hi Om,

I’m a huge fan and appreciate all you’ve done to deliver breaking news to keep me up to speed on the happenings in the Valley and beyond.

Best wishes on a speedy recovery. I expect that your doctors have already put you on an exercise program and nutrition guidelines, but if you need any non-stress exercise or nutrition tips let me know!

    Thanks,
    Jaafer

  335. I wish you healing Om. I promise the Internet will keep running while you’re resting.

Put it down now Om. Put the iPhone down and just repeat your name over and over.

  336. Om — I know I’m late to the party with ‘get well wishes’, but I wanted to give you a chance to dig out! Really, I’m so happy that everything worked out well for you, and I wish you good fortune with your healthier lifestyle — definitely won’t be easy, but you’ve got so many friends & well-wishers… they won’t let you slip! 🙂

    Dave

  337. I am so glad to hear that you are well now. When I was in NY for a shot while few months back, almost the time you had launched the Giga OM show I never missed any episode on iTunes and I recall one viewer had once funnily remarked that you should shed few kilos. I hope you take that comment seriously now. Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

  338. Wishing you a speedy recovery. I appreciate your experience as I had cardiac arrest 4 years ago. While riding my bicycle, I collapsed at the top of a hill. Breathing stopped, heart stopped, I was unconscious. Lucky for me a nurse happened by and called 911 and gave me CPR. In this case that is the only reason I am still here. I was in a coma for 17 hours, then underwent quadruple-bypass surgery, and took several weeks to get any strength back. I completely forgot everything that happened two full weeks prior to the incident (opposite of Bourne?), and do not remember the bike ride. This may be too much information, but it is just to show that recovery is possible. Best wishes, Steve (P.S. Enjoy your show GigaOM, as well as Cranky Geeks appearances.

  339. Get well soon Om.

I guess it is time to say goodbye to cigars etc.

My calling came in 2004 and since then I have lost approx. 50 pounds, and now weight a healthy 160.

    Vic.

PS: It is OK to a slim avatar. 🙂

  340. I was shocked to hear about you heart attack (just found out recently) but glad to know that you are back in the game. All the wishes and hopes for your continued recovery and healthier lifestyle!

  341. Hey Om:

Not sure if you remember me from San Francisco.

Sorry to hear that you haven’t been well. I’m confident you’ll take the steps necessary to get back on your feet in no time. I may have some news to share with you in a couple of months, but will not excite you now since it’s premature.

  343. It seems a bit late to add to this topic but, I only know of Om through my listening to the Cranky geeks podcasts with John dvorak.
I have been listening to the achived shows after just discovering them and I have found Om to be hilariously funny!
so the more recent story about bloging being a halth risk, where John mentions Om having a heart attack on his show…scared me. I didn’t know anything of this!
I just wanted to let you know that I am so happy to discover that you are now OK.
May you have many years of bringing people your excellent sense of perception on the world..which I have discovered I love reading your blog too now. you have a great sense of humour and see things in a way that is well, just interesting and down to earth.
I wish you good health Om!
