Happy New Year. As you may have noticed, my byline hasn’t been up on the site for a few days. That’s because the holidays weren’t exactly my most jolly.
I had a heart attack on Dec. 28. I was able to walk into the hospital for treatment that night and have been recovering here ever since. With the support of my family and my team, I am on the road to a full recovery. I am going to be OK.
Katie and Liz and the rest of the team will be posting updates on my progress on the site. I’ll be back and writing again as soon as possible.
Now living a healthier life isn’t just one of my New Year’s resolutions, it’s doctor’s orders. Friends and family have purged my apartment of smokes, scotch and all my favorite fatty foods — I am even going to be drinking decaf. I won’t be refashioning my avatar’s stogie with a celery stick, but I will be taking better care of my health.
I hope you do, too.
Best wishes,
Om

Your periodic gruff exterior (perhaps about to get gruffer short term from absence of caffeine?) can’t hide the fact that you’re one of the “good guys” in the industry.
All of us here at the Agency wish you a speedy recovery.

Lou

Oh no!
Om, please get better soon.
Your friend, Eric.
I hope you feel better buddy. Get some rest, do some rehab and get a bike and ride around. It’ll kick your ass at first but then you’ll be dropping weight and put less of a strain on the old ticker.
I went into the hospital Friday night, perhaps same time as you, with dizziness, shortness of breath, and got full thyroid/enzyme workup. Luckily, my prognosis was OK, but it makes me completely empathize with your experience. Good luck and take good care of your health.
Hey buddy 🙂
Glad to hear that you are ok. Looking forward to catching up when you are out.
If you get bored over there, don’t hesitate to call me.
D
I’m very glad to hear you’re on the mend Om. Our thoughts and wishes are with you for a speedy recovery and an easy time following your new health regime. Take good care.

Get well soon, Om. Glad to hear you’re recovering and we’ll continue to get your news analysis. Take it easy for now though. No late nights working on stories, ya hear?
Only decaf now? Ouch. I’m sure you’ll find a way to stay mentally alert and write great articles.
Om,
Glad to hear that you are doing better now. Also glad to hear that you have gotten rid of a lot of unhealthy stuff. John said it right…you can go down in scale from GigaOm to MegaOm and we will still keep reading your posts! Here’s to a healthier new year for you.
Om, So sorry to hear the news, but very glad to hear you are recovering! Best wishes for a speedy recovery… my thoughts will definitely be with you!
Dan
Om,
That’s shocking news! But you know, it’s not all bran muffins and carrot sticks from this point forward. After being warned by my own doctor about the dangers of high fat food, I began to substitute … hot peppers. It opened up entirely new vistas in eating.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery, and stay away from the stogies!
Alec.
Om, best wishes on a speedy recovery. I might be able to take care of the Scotch for you!
Very grateful to hear that you walked away from this one and are taking care to prevent another. We need you here, OK?
Om, man, get well soon, and I am told that red wine is just fine in moderation, so I look forward to enjoying it with you soon!
Om,
Wishing you a speedy recovery!
I knew this was going to be heavy when I saw the title, and it sure was. Heart disease is serious, but you can live with it, as I’ve found out. I had bypass surgery in 2002, and I’m still here. You can also quit smoking, it’s easy when you have motivation.
Om, when you’re feeling better let’s go for a walk.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery, Om!
Om, I’m looking forward to seeing you back on your feet again soon. Take it easy, and best wishes for a speedy recovery. — PB
Ouch! Very happy to hear that you’re recovering. Let us know if you start “health blogging” (a more serious twist on Jason’s fatblogging). Might be a good place to exchange tips, or just to gripe: “I’m hungry!”
Get well Om!
Om – I hope you have a quick recovery. Get well soon! Here’s to a healthy and vibrant 2008!

Wishing you all the best,
Ben + Sofia
Om,
We all wish you a speedy recovery. I would humbly ask that your other friends and acquaintances join me in this prayer for healing, called a “Mi Sheberach”
May the One who blessed our ancestors, Sarah and Abraham, Rebecca and Isaac, Leah, Rachel and Jacob bless Om Mailk along with all of the ill among us. Grant insight to those who bring healing, courage and faith to those who are sick, love and strength to us and to all who love them. God, let your spirit rest upon all who are ill and comfort them. May they and we soon know a time of complete healing, a healing of the body and a healing of the spirit and let us say: Amen.
Om – wish you a speedy recovery – if you are still in NYC and I can do anything for you – please do not hesitate to give me a call or email.
Hey Om, you must have a strong will to “walk into the hospital for treatment that night” did you remember to pop in a Bayer Aspirin when you started feeling it or something. Best of luck of your recovery and hope to read more of your articles soon.
Cesar
I’d just like to say that Om is the best boss I’ve ever had (and that includes my mom). Let’s just say he stuck with me even after my own extended stay in a hospital (not to mention the illness that precluded it).
So get better, man! I miss you already.
Damn man. Glad to hear it was caught and that you’re on the road to recovery.

Sorry to hear the news, Om. May you have a fast, speedy, and healthy recovery! Get well soon! – Josh
Om, I was saddened to hear this news. It is just a reminder that we need to appreciate each new day of our life with joy and take utmost care to make it last. From the famous Stanford graduation speech from Steve Jobs, we must make the best use of the time we have now. Like all good things, it will end. I wish to see a more healthy, fit and prolific Om soon. Speedy recovery.
Wishing you all the best Om. And — on a side note — happy to recommend a fabulous nutritionist who has helped my husband and me break our bad food habits over the past year in a reasonable, sensible way. My hub has lost 90 lbs and I’m down 50.
Michelle @ footnoted
Om,

Om, nothing is worth giving up your health for. I am glad you got a wake up call that left you healing and thinking, because your life will be richer and better now. So glad to hear you will be okay, and must remind you that you come from a rich meditative tradition and you shouldn’t try so hard to be “American.” We have all the heart attacks.
Namaste and much love
Francine
Om, be well. I have an artificial heart valve myself. Call if you want to compare heart stories.
Get well soon.

Sorry to hear that Om. Glad to see you’re doing better.
Hope to see you back on your feet soon.
Bad way to start the new year; I hope it only gets better for you, Om. In fact, I know it will. We should get a PowerWalk group in SF to make us all healthier.
Om, I’m glad you’re going to be OK. But I cannot believe you’re going offline cold turkey. Don’t worry. Someone will slip you a blackberry and you’ll squeeze in posts from the treadmill.
All the best.
best wishes and take care!
Om, You know what, it is a club you just joined. The life changing type. I joined in 2002. Now doing Triathlon this year as a result. No-one knows how it feels nor how it felt. I wish you well and a offer a skype line should you want to ever discuss. It helped me 🙂
Be good to yourself, Om. Get well soon. We’ll all be watching and pulling for you.
Om,
From bad comes good. I hope that you recover and end up being better than ever. I have to join you too.

Get well soon!
Hello Om,
Good to know you’re OK.
I went through a similar (but less serious) trial a year and a half ago, and I’ve since readjusted (lost 20Kg) and vastly improved my condition by dint of walking a lot more every day (besides all the rest that you’ll probably hear a hundred times over the next few weeks).
Be patient. Relax. Enjoy the company of your family right now, and prepare to start enjoying all sorts of different stuff as you begin to get out, exercise and change all sorts of little things about your daily habits.
It always turns out for the best, believe me.
om, best wishes and here’s to a speedy recovery. -cfc
Hi Om,
Please take care of your health and make this a wonderful year for yourself and your near/dear ones……wish you a speedy recovery.

Anand
Take care man. Don’t sweat the work … there’s always new tech, but only one you.
Wishing you the best Om. Take care!
Rest up OM. Looking forward to seeing you back in the saddle soon. Cheers, Sameer
From a reader whose own unexpected hospitalization (followed by an urgent bypass) was 7+ years ago – let me offer anecdotal evidence that there can be good life after these events. Once over the initial hump I’ve been as (or more) active / productive / happy as ever — and I wish and predict the same for you!
Too many trips to Punjab! Take it easy, and get better soon, my friend…
hey brother, mend fast
then we’ll start you on your new surfing regimen

Om, I’m a lurker who never comments but I’ll de-lurk for this: Here’s to a healthy 2008 and your quick recovery.
(P.S. I quit caffeine this summer and am surprised to say that I don’t think you’ll regret it at all, given the fine decaf lattes available ’round here.)

Get better and take good care of yourself Om.
Prayers for you that you will get well very soon.
Om,
I was completely shocked to hear this news. I’m almost at a loss of words. You’ve never met me, but I feel like I’ve met you. I have followed GigaOM and its accompanying blogs for … what seems like forever. You and your staff have enlightened me and countless others and are always a great source for the latest buzz in the industry.
Of course, the great news is that you’re still here and you’re recovering. It will be tough, as a number of previous commenters have pointed out, but it’s truly worth it.
Writing should be the least of your concerns — getting better should be the first. Seriously. Don’t worry about your byline not appearing as often; your readership more than understands.
I wish you all the best in getting better and look forward to you returning when you’re ready – regardless of how far down the road that may be.
-Ben

Get better soon Om! We’ll take you out for a nice lean steak sometime in the new year. (With steamed veggies.)
Glad to hear you are okay and I hope you recover quickly.
So, Om, did they have to do a bypass or were you lucky enough to, uh, bypass that? Stent? Best wishes and get well soon.
Get Well soon!!
Best wishes, Om. Get well soon and let me know if there’s anything I can do to help.

Om, get well soon – your feed was my first subscription in my google reader. I continue to look to you for your perspective on the wireless industry and always enjoy the thorough research. This setback will only be remembered as the start of your training for the olympic coverage in 2008!
Get well soon buddy!
Get well soon..

get better soon! take care.
Om,
My thoughts and prayers are with you my friend. Glad to hear you are on the mend.
Get better soon, and I look forward to hearing about your progress with the new lifestyle!
Pretty gutsy (and, BTW, blogger-authentic) to disclose this to your readers. It gives us all an opportunity to support you in this time of healing especially after all of the value you’ve given out for so long to all of us.
Priority #1 is taking care of yourself and take whatever time you need. Your web assets will continue to thrive since your personal brand and values imprint is the directive force any team would need to keep it headed down the right path.
Om,
Take some time to read Ray Kurzweil’s Fantastic Voyage. (http://www.fantastic-voyage.net)
After 20 years…it is the only book that truly connected me with my health and well being. Ray throws in some nano-bots from time to time to keep it interesting. (:
I also highly recommend Aikido…
Be well.
Keith
Get well soon, we all need you!
Love to you Om. Don’t read about the A’s for a while…..

Just learned of your status via an email from Andy.
Two years ago I had surgery to repair an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) which, fortunately, had been detected before it burst. As far as I’m concerned I’m only here today because of the developments in medical imaging (CT scanners and ultrasound) and treatment over the past decade along with my own doctor’s request for an ultrasound for a non-cardiovascular condition that proved negative. It was a set of circumstances that changed my perspective on life; today I just count every new day as a blessing. (A burst AAA, which gives no external warning signs, provides little chance of survival.)
Also I have the good fortune to have a son who is not only training to become a cardiologist but also is an accomplished inventor of medical devices for cardiovascular imaging and treatment. (Did they give you a rinspiration treatment?) With today’s medical ecosystem and technology, and given you walked in under your own steam, sounds like your prognosis is pretty good (provided Helene doesn’t have to rap your fingers).
Over the past two years I have had the opportunity to meet many wonderful people in this communications technology space. While we have crossed paths mostly in the blogosphere (and only once physically), you have become numero uno in my books for all you do to keep us informed and on our toes.
Best wishes for a full and speedy recovery; just keep in mind your health comes ahead of your work. We all want you here for the long term. No Blackberries in the hospital!!
Om —
Glad to hear that you’re feeling better. Scary stuff, man. Look forward to seeing you back up and running soon.
Take care,
Sir Ji,
Daaru-vaaru chhodo..sehat ke liye achchha nai hota hai..Get well soon..we are missing you on revision3.
OM:
It’s always a shock to hear this kind of thing, and more of a shock when you’re the one going through it. My first run in with heart issues was three years ago, and even though I have bad family history in this area, it was still a surprise when that first abnormal feeling hit. I’m blessed they caught things in time (two arteries were 99 percent blocked, and I have three stents). Now it’s meds, healthier diet (I refuse to give up caffeine), exercise (the dogs make sure), twice yearly trips to the the cardiologist, and annual nuclear stress tests (I don’t mind these, I joke with the staff, they play soothing jazz music, I fall asleep … and there are snacks and juice afterward) It’s all integrated in my life, and I don’t think about it much. (I’m early 40s).
I wish you all the best. Take your time and have a smooth recovery. Ignore stories about so and so going back to work five days after his heart attack. Patooey. Take it easy for as long as you can.
Jeff
Very sorry to hear it, Om, but very glad to hear that you’ll be taking care of yourself. I’m sure a lot of us will learn from you, as we’ve learned from you about other matters. Get well soon!

Hope you feel better! As a former smoker, I can promise you that life as a non-smoker is 100000 times better. It’s tough the first couple days then again at the 3 month mark for some reason, but after that.. life improves drastically by the month.

Hey Om,
My father had a heart attack last March and although it was a terrifying experience for my entire family, the doctors say that the ultimate impact it will have had on his health is a beneficial one because it has forced him to improve his diet and exercise habits.
Whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger… In that spirit, I’d also be happy to show you some great runs around SF!
Take care of yourself.
Reed

My advice is to give up work and really kick back. At 41 its not just the diet or stogies but the stress too. My friend had one last june but didn’t make it out to the end of the year after trying to get back to work. God rest Jack, and please don’t put your life on the line.

Om,
Be well, my friend! May you enjoy health, happiness and prosperity in 2008!
cheers, Mark Evans
Om, my friend,
Like our pal Dave Winer, I’m in the club of cardiac patients (different malady). It’s a wake-up call, a second-chance, a near-miss. You can expect to get lots of support from your numberless friends online. When you feel tempted to go for that Wendy’s triple with bacon and two cheeses, just let us know and we’ll give you the backing you need. The new, svelt Om will come out on the other end of this. There are running shoes in your future. And you know what? It feels good. In fact, it’s an addiction worse than Quarter Pounders. I am sure you will take this on with the doggedness that you devote to a story or a startup. So I know you’ll be fine. so get walking, then running. And enjoy the turkey burgers.
jeff
Rest well, take care of yourself, and recover soon.
Om, now I almost feel guilty for stealing your nametag at the NewTeeVee conference. Almost.
Get better and listen to your mom, no more smoking.
-Kent
Om, thank goodness you are OK, all the best for a full recovery and a healthy 2008!
Let’s hope you drag some other techies into health by your example. 🙂
Snaggy and Nitrozac
(from the Joy of Tech comic)
Wish you a speedy recovery Om. That news was heart-breaking.
Om,
Ive been reading your writing since the Business 2 days. Pretty much from when GigaOm came into existance. I hope you do better soon. The important thing is not to take stress and have a healthy lifestyle .. so relax, stay fit and reduce work hours a bit. Gigaom is a top notch blog and am sure will continue to be since you have a great team in place.
Wish you a speedy recovery!
Much much love, prayers, and strength to you, Om. Rest easy.
Om, Care for yourself and accept the help and support of others.
You were incredibly supportive of our son, let others return that kind of care.
Get well.
Get well soon! Your site/knowledge is very much appreciated.
Get well soon, Om! We need you! 🙂
Dear Om,
I feel for you, it’s been two weeks that I’m spending one hour per day at the hospital. The reason you may ask ? My father had some kind of heart problem too on the 25 december, we thought it was nothing but then one of his lungs started to fill with water and we had to take him to emergencies. However, he is getting well, but there is a lot of effort to make (he also has diabetes and kidney problems).
Anyways, I’m just saying that because I know these kind of things are hard to deal with. It can depress you, and bring sadness in your life. I’ll just say that I wish you the best of luck and a very fast recovery and that I can’t wait to see you on the show again !
Cheers,
Matthieu. (One of your french readers that is ashamed to post a comment for the first time for such a reason. What can I say ? I’m a Web Worker and I’m mostly working on my personnal Web 2 app and reading WebWorkerDaily 😉

I had a heart attack a year ago right before Christmas at the age of 45. Quite a shock and wake up call. I recovered fast, was home in days, but combined with winter blues made it a difficult start of the year. Now my spirits are up, I’ve more stamina the I’ve had for years, I’m 30 lbs lighter (and 30 to go), I’m exercising at the Berkeley YMCA with a friend 3 days a week, and my blood chemistry and other tests are great. So it will be a tough couple of months coming up, but stick it out and figure out how to make your life-style changes livable, and you’ll be much better soon!
Om – relax, get some sleep, catch up on Aqua Teen Hungerforce, and we’ll look forward to seeing you soon!
Om, take care and get well soon.
Om, its a shocker, but also a relief to hear that you’re recovering well. Take care of your health man…and the rest will follow
Take care of yourself, Om!
Martin
Om,
Please, please, please listen to your doctor and get well – for the (long) rest of your life.
I attended a funeral today for one of two close friends, both of whom died last week from heart attacks. One was 60, the other only 53.
I can’t take anymore of this!! GET WELL!!

I had no idea. Was wondering where you were when the last email exchange about getting together during the holidays stopped abruptly … when you get better, you’re in for a long lecture, buddy.
love, Sramana
nice post…
Om, best wishes for a speedy recovery. I have some good news — you don’t have to give up fatty foods (smoking yes, but not fatty foods).
If you count calories, you can eat whatever you want as long as you don’t exceed your daily limit and don’t reach your limit too early in the day.
Watch The Biggest Loser, which uses this method, and also check out the National Weight Control Registry. http://www.nwcr.ws
Learn about caloric density — that’s the holy grail.
One more thing — one mile of walking at 3 MPH burns 75-100 calories. Even the most out of shape person can easily walk 3 miles. Start there and soon you’ll be walking 15 miles or more at 4 MPH. It’s the best low impact exercise though it does take time when you start racking up crazy distances. After a 12 mile walk you can eat a pint of Ben & Jerrys and it’ll be a wash (this is after you reach your desired weight). 3 hours for the walk, 15 minutes to eat the pint. Oh well.
Get well soon Om..Family, friends and health – everything else doesnt matter.
Om,
Glad to hear you are ok.
Best wishes for a faster and complete recovery.
Arvind
Om!
Jeez that’s scary. Guess we’re not 26 anymore 😉 Please rest up and when you’re better I’ll jump on the program with you so we’re assured some balance… the hours you put in is enough to make anyone ill.
I’m here to do whatever to help. Call me when you’re up to it.
Donna
Hey Om…I had no clue until I just read your site today after being away.
Anyway, drink some chicken soup and all will be well.
Best to you!

Hi Om,
Really sorry to hear about your heart attack last week – it’s a reminder we all have to watch it. Glad to hear that your better; had hoped to meet you last month at LeWeb3, but didn’t end up crossing paths with you.
Most important thing is now, to rest and fully recover – and, fortunately, Blogging is something, when you feel up to it, you can do, even in bed.
Enjoy reading your posts and deep analysis, esp of Telecom …and I want to keep on reading your stuff.
So, rest well, and you’ll be better soon – and even better than before.
Om, best wishes to you and here’s hoping for a speedy and full recovery.
Glad you are doing well!

Dear Om,
Get well soon. I have learned so much from you. We all need you. I have been glued to the office chair myself, transitioning from IT in a big organization to life in the wilds of the Internet. I watched my waste expand in the process. We all have to strike a balance. Yesterday I bought “Perfect Pushup”; its not much but its the kind of exercise you can do between every 5 emails or 200 lines of code. Being a classic yo-yo with my health and weight, I know the secret is calisthenics and diet. Be healthy Om. -Travell
WTF…was it the lack of a Christmas present to you?
get better and i promise i’ll frame your Times of India article dated Dec 28th.

Sorry to hear of your holiday troubles, Om. Sounds like the new plan is a good one and best of health to you in 2008.
Joe
Om, you’ve got enough well wishes, so I’d like to take it one step further by giving you some great eating ideas. Specifically, switch over to a Greek/Mediterranean diet and your taste buds won’t skip a beat as your heart mends. Some of my favourites:
Breakfast – Greek Toast
2 slices of multi-grain toast. Spread 1/2 teaspoon of olive oil onto each + a sprinkling of crumbled feta cheese and oregano. You’ll love it and the decaf coffee will go down easier. Better yet, a nice bottle of water.
OR
natural yogurt + fresh honey. Filling, healthy and sweet. Honey burns quickly.
Lunch
Greek Salad (tomatoes, cucumbers, green peppers, onions and a couple of olives) + grilled chicken breast. Virgin olive oil, balsamic vinegar and oregano on the salad (skip the feta if you already had a Greek toast in the morning). Freshly squeezed lemon for the chicken breast.
Dinner
Grilled/baked Salmon topped with freshly squeezed lemon. Serve with 1-2 sliced tomatoes topped with olive oil and oregano. 1 glass of red wine.
Hope you like the menu!
Regards,
George
Hope you are feeling better! Please let us know how things progress!
Best,
-Serge

Om
Hope the path you’ve been shown leads to a healthy and prosperous 2008. Be well.
Bonifer
Nothing but good thoughts.
Glad to hear you are recovering well. Get well soon OM. We want you back with your stories.
Om, While I was dismayed to hear about your heart attack I’m so glad to hear you take such a upbeat tone in this post. It sounds as if the good doctors and the rest of the dear people in your life have taken things well and firmly in hand.
But please reconsider just one part of the plan. If I could just plant a celery stick amidst a pile of frozen peas in my bra in your honor it would do my heart good. It’s more blessed to give than receive even when it comes to good natured ribbing in the guise of providing endorphin-releasing smiles to recovering patients of all stripes, right?
Apparently our jobs now involve giving our respective illnesses hell and treat ourselves better than we have in the past. I’m in the process of learning how to do that, and hope you’ll help me celebrate many long and healthy years observing the better days that are sure to come after Christmas week 2007!
Susan
Get well soon..

Om-
Love the blog, and the show, and your past work in B2.0, too. You have the vision and the insight that keeps us all coming back for more, so like, we’re your junkies and we’ll be needing more stuff, real bad!
Take care of yourself, and, for what it’s worth, I am personally taking this as a cautionary tale, and will be making changes in the hopes of precluding the same thing happening to me.
Your (currently) brother in flubber,
DaveA
Glad to hear you’re recovering well, Om. And great that your family is there to support you. Sounds like you’ve got your priorities straight, so take your time and don’t rush things.
Om, wishing you all the best of recoveries and a happy, healthy 2008. You’ll be back soon typing out marathon-session posts and cranking it up with Dvorak. Positive thoughts and best wishes from all of us at HydraMedia.
Om, I hope you recover very quickly. Sadly, I know at least 3 other friends under 40 who also went through this. Let’s start a facebook group to bring more awareness to this issue, and maybe help improve our too often overworked unhealthy lifestyles in the Valley.
Om, I was shocked to hear about your heart attack, but very happy to hear you’re making a full recovery. Wish you all the best in health and happiness in 2008!
Om,
Get better soon. The world is a much better place with you in it, my friend.
Best,
Mike
OM,Get well soon !!!
Oh my goodness Om, what a scare that must have been!
At the risk of making light of a very serious situation, they do say that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. I find that we all get small messages about things we need to change in our lives every day that increase in magnitude and severity the longer we ignore them.
The beauty of this is that you will now put your health as a priority, which will benefit us all. We need you around in the long run!
Sending good healing thoughts from here in Arizona, and best wishes to you and your family for a revitalized, healthy and happy New Year.
All the best,
-Pam
Glad to here your doing better– get well soon OM!!!!

Om, take care of yourself first… you’re what’s important.
I had to make similar changes about 6 weeks ago. I’m overweight, didn’t take care of myself, worked long stressful hours + I’m a Dad to a supercharged almost 2yr old. This resulted in high BP and an irregular heart beat.
Beleive me, that’s all the warning I wanted to even know about. I hired a trainer and now my family comes first, my workouts second and then if I have time for blogging great, if not, great.
Om
Sorry to hear you had a heart attack.
Wishing you a prompt recovery.
Gives me something to think about for my ‘Just over 50 and not Dead yet’ panel at ‘South by Southwest’…Smarter and Healthier?

My partner quit smoking after 35 years. He was one of those guys who loved loved his cigarettes. He read a book by Allan Carr called “the easy way to stop smoking” (read the small version not the large). While it took him 4 months to read the final page he quit the next day and hasn’t gone back (5 years ago). It wasn’t just a help for his smoking but a call to action to change many things health wise in his life. It might be helpful to you as you go through it…..best wishes for a happy and healthy 2008 🙂
Om,
Hope you get well soon. My prayers for your speedy recovery.

[insert get well message]
Om, get some much deserved rest. No more Tube rides for you; next trip to London we walk back to the hotel. See you soon.
Om,
Health…Family…Job…in that order. This was an important lesson I learned in business more years ago than I’d like to admit. It has served me well personally and with those that I work with.
As I tip my single-malt to you (I will never give it up) I wish you a speedy recovery and a happy, healthy New Year!
Glad to hear you made it.
May your recovery be speedy, and may your new, healthy vices be at least as satisfying as your old ones.
-Paul
On the bright side, you survived, and it’s not that hard to give up fatty foods, cigarettes, and scotch. It’s harder to give up being alive.
Om – Best wishes for a speedy recovery. Glad that you are on the road to recovery!
Om ! Get well soon, man !
Please get well soon Om, really like your blog.
Om, I’m so sorry to hear you are unwell. Feel better, my friend, and take of yourself. My thoughts are with you!
Glad to hear you’re on your way back to better health, Om. This makes me regret loaning you 4 or 5 smokey treats during breaks at NewTeeVee Live.
Get well soon.
Wish you full and deep recovery, and sooner than later 😉 I hope it was just earlier bell than anything that serious, so you will take it serious and find alternative path in lifestyle with even better performance.
I had 4 way bypass 5+ years ago. Life does get better. Listen to your doctor. Get some exercise and love life more than you every have before.
Get well soon….
Take care OM. All the best for 2008.
Get well soon, my day is never complete without reading your site.
Om, best wishes. Hope to read more from you soon.
But remember this will take some time, i. e. your recovery. So, take it easy. Make it a routine to get out and move (on your feet). But do not over do it while fresh out of the hospital, it takes time to build a mental and physical model of what your body can do. As they say, running is 80% mental strength and 20% physical strength. So give your poor body some time to catch up to your mental capabilities.
Om, Get Well Soon!
Om, best wishes for a fast recovery. Glad that you have plenty of people to help you get through this, and lots of fans to send good healing vibes your way.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery and healthier years to come. I’ll be watching for that byline.
Om, hope you’re already feeling better and best wishes for a full recovery. Take care – we’re all looking forward to your insights for a long time to come.
hey om, accepting visitors today? love to swing b during the tail end of the afternoon… take care mate! >b
OM,
I wish you a speedy recovery.
Om, get well soon.
Please ask your doctor/dietician/nutritionist about “Omega-3 Esters”. They’re a specific form of fatty acids that significantly reduce the chance of heart complications. After a few years of research, I’ve found X-tend Life to be the best brand on the market.
This form of omega-3 is absorbed more slowly over time providing more consistent protection than other forms such as triglycerides.
Please ask your doctor. It’s one of THE best changes you can make to your diet, period.
Cheers,
Stace
Om, I wish you a fast and speedy recovery. Don’t be blogging from bed now. Those are some good resolutions. I’m glad your friends and family are helping.
Thinking of you this morning and sending warm wishes for a speedy recovery across the miles.
From all of us at Rediff and India Abroad, best wishes on a speedy recovery and a healthy lifestyle. You take lots of care.

Om: I think many of us are running too fast and hard trying to keep up with the pace of technology so thank goodness you got a wake up call that gives you a solid second chance. You have a fantastic team and obviously tons of support so I wish you the best as you focus on healing and changing your life to be healthy and strong. If you steep it long enough, green tea takes on the smoky flavor of scotch 🙂
Om – sending you speedy recovery wishes. I got the orders to get moving 10 years ago after a serious illness, and that’s when I started swing dancing. I highly recommend it as the only exercise that’s actually fun.
Om,
Only just seen this – very sorry to hear about it.
Best wishes for a full recovery and most importantly, take care of yourself!
cheers,
Nick
Good luck Om and enjoy your new lifestyle 🙂

Sorry to hear about this. 🙁
Get Well Soon, Om! 😀
R.I.P OM, lol.. i.e only until you get better 😉
Wish you a speedy recovery Om. Get well soon.
Om,
That was Nature’s wake up call. It’s nothing for anyone to be sorry or depressed about..it’s just cause and effect. My sincere hope is that you will soon be able to establish a new “Fit for Life”campaign with a focus on daily aerobic exercise including some variety in it so it doesn’t get too oppressive and will, therefore, be sustainable. The nutritional component is also important–but again doesn’t have to be all that spartan. Finally, there’s the managing of one’s mental state component. I keep coming back to this blog to keep my own Type A tendencies in check: http://feeds.feedburner.com/zenhabits
I know all of this advice from your doctors, your family and friends and all of us well-wishers who know you through your writings must sound like you are about to be sentenced to a life devoid of pleasure, but it doesn’t really have to be like that at all.
I am confident that you will be able, through sheer force of personality, to triumph over this temporary setback.
Best wishes for this next phase of your life!
Scott
Om,
I spent some time in the hospital in 2007 and as bad as that was, stay focused on life on the outside. It’ll take a little bit to get there, but there’s better days ahead.
Take care and we’ll all be here when you’re ready to come back.
Snake
Om,
Sorry to hear the news. I read your site daily and my heart sunk when I heard the news. Felt like a family member was sick. Anyway, good to hear you will be OK and I am looking forward to you getting back to your normal self. Let me know if I can help in any way.
Best of luck on a holistic recovery.
Om,
Kya yaar! Bataaya tak nahin!
Chinta hai, phone keejiyega!
Hazaar duaaein…
Get well soon Om. I would start slow and only give up the fatty foods first. Then if necessary stop with the scotch and cigars.
Unless the doctor insists on cold turkey on all three.
All the best with the recovery,
Jeb

Get Well Soon Om.
Very sad when I heard it, and surprised that you are only 41. Looks like you lived your life to the fullest.
Get well soon.
Om,
This is Andrew from TheSportsTV.com, we had a brief conversation about you love of sports at the NewTeeVee Pier 39 screening during the Super Nova conference week in the summer. You talked about how when you lived in NYC the Yankees and baseball helped you become better connected to the city and American culture.
I wish you a speedy recover and a recommendation to read a recent New York Times Bestseller book that would be very relevant to read called, “YOUNGER NEXT YEAR” – Live strong, fit, and sexy – until you’re 80 & Beyond, by Chris Cowley and Henry S. Lodge, M.D.
Best of luck!
Andrew

Hi Om,
Get well.
You aren’t the first, and you won’t be the last founder of a high-pressured start-up to get a heart attack, and your work is in media and technology -so remember to delegate.
Enjoy life and don’t let it rush past.
Yours kindly,
Shakir Razak
Om,
I’m glad to hear you’re coming through this. Best to you, and a speedy recovery.
Michael
Dear Om – Glad to hear that you are recovering. This epidemic of heart disease in young South Asians is brutal and relentless. When you feel better connect with us – we are a non-profit primary and secondary prevention program focused on this very same issue. In the meantime, take care, and alert all your South Asian friends to get screened now! They can prevent an event that’s lurking in their near future starting today.
Best,
-Ashish
Om!
You scared the crap out of us. Phew! Thank god you could walk in and get immediate care.
This could turn out to be the kind of scare that turns you into a health freak, which is what you need to make up for all that fun body abuse.
Take care, get better and we send our love for a speedy recovery.
Enjoy the down time as much as you can.
Love,
Susan Bratton
Hi Om, I am so glad to hear you are recovering well. I’m not sure if you remember me, but I’m the gal that was blogging from a Phuket hospital about the Indian Ocean tsunami nearly 3 years ago to the date of your heart attack. You referenced my blog posts a few times during the midst of that global tragedy.
That was a mighty close brush with death for me too. But it was also a much needed (in hindsight) wake-up call.
Where seemingly an outsider would assume that one just gets “back in the saddle” and continues on with their plans for January (given some mourning time for the hundreds of thousands in my case, recovery in yours)…or maybe February or perhaps March then. Yet it was a life-altering pivot point – a discontinuity if you will – and there was no picking up where I left off. My life has taken me in surprising directions since then, and life is so much more precious and ALIVE if that makes sense on a day to day moment to moment basis. I’ve journeyed interior and exterior places I wouldn’t have contemplated without that little ‘shove’.
Coming close to death changes one – consider allowing it. I was told by some wise counselors about “post-traumatic growth” – meaning that PTSD isn’t evitable by survivors, in fact, quite a few people radically alter and catapult their lives in extraordinary ways after a major accident, illness, or trauma. (For instance, read “It’s Not About the Bike” by Lance Armstrong if you doubt.)
This is what I wish for you. That this (albeit forced) time off gives you a stunning opportunity to taste life at a whole new level and act directly from your heart – literally.
Namaste.
(p.s. My email should you want to chat is a gmail account with words Crossroads Dispatches – and that’s written without the spaces.)
Best wishes for a speedy recovery to Mr Malick!
Hi Om, Get well soon. For some “startling implications for diet weight loss and long-term health” I recommend you check out a book called “The China Study”. I first heard of it from the folks over at smugmug (http://blogs.smugmug.com/baldy/)

Dear Om, I was shocked to hear the news and hope you are doing better. I’ve been on a heart attack alert for years now given family history, poor cholesterol and the fact that people from our part of the world tend to be more prone to heart disease….I’m glad you have so much support and that you are focusing on a healthier lifestyle. Best wishes to you. Would love to talk to you soon.

Om, my friend, get well soon.
Hi Om, I too spent Dec 28th in ER. My lungs weren’t letting me breathe and I had my first major asthma attack ever, after being diagnosed with asthma several months ago. It was pretty scary. I’m sure we shared similar emotions that day.
Thanks for all your hard work with GigaOm. I read it almost everyday. And I cherish it and everything else in life — such as a breath of air or a beat of the heart! — a little bit more now.
Om,
I’ve said this before – you’ve been an inspiration for me with your leadership and impact. I wish you a speedy recovery so we can have another decaf together.
Shaherose
Get Well Soon Om!
Om, you are in my thoughts and hopes and prayers.
I wish you a smooth and easy recovery, and hope this early warning will lead to a healthier 2008 and beyond.
Your (more frequent) words will be missed in the weeks ahead, but you will be ever foremost on the minds of the people who adore you, who are more, no doubt, that you can count.
Warmly,
Dina

My Friend,
For all of us during our time on earth, there comes a time to sow…and a time to reap…
While your readers (me included) would sorely miss you; your health and life are worth far more to your family, other loved ones, and us readers and supporters than your continued heavy involvement in running GigaOm.
Is it time to reap the wonderful company you’ve built?
Best wishes for a swift recovery.
Steve

Get well soon and stay focussed on your own wellbeing,
Simon
Omygod!
I always had you down as the next (and dare I say greatest) Bond villain, I only hope the celery doesn’t soften you up too much and prevent you from delivering that deadly bon mot ‘voice over internet protocol Mr Bond?’.
Wishing you all the best.
Adam & Fat Men
Hey Om,
Sorry to hear about the tough time. Going through something similar actually. The blessing here is that we both have a second chance to make things right health-wise. It sounds like you have a lot of support, but if you need a partner on the same health warpath in the Bay Area. Let me know.
-BIGmike
A friend passed a story to me titled “How did you like your heart attack?” You are re prioritizing your life, spending more time with your family, deciding what is flotsam and what is really and truly important in your life and taking better care of yourself. “But I thought I was going to die.” “You will, just not today, so how do you like the results of your heart attack?” Get well soon and have fun in the refocusing.
Om, our thoughts are with you for the strength and fortitude to get past this episode stronger and more healthy than ever. We are there for you.
Andy Plesser
I hope you feel better Om (have been following your blog for a while since the Dave McClure intro). Take care, Premal

Om,
Honey, you gotta take care of yourself. We need you around here and you better get it together! I find I always take my health for granted until something happens — one realizes not much is worthwhile if one isnt healthy. Hope to see you soon, and my prayers and positive energy are with you. Sabrina
Get well soon, Om! Balancing life’s pleasures with life’s risks can be a challenge, but “living” in the most natural sense (ie., breathing) takes precedence over everything else. 😉
Hi OP!!!

Om, good to hear you are on the mend. I got on the “healthy eating” stuff about 2 years ago, at first it sounded awful, but I’ve got to tell you, after a few weeks you won’t miss all the bad food you used to eat and you’ll feel great.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
Om,
My best wishes for a speedy recovery. It’s like the catastrophe when you think your hard drive is dying and you have no backup. Luckily sometimes they are able to extract and save the data from the drive. At that moment you feel a huge sense of relief. You are very lucky, we all are very lucky you are still here. Make sure you work at staying here.
Om,
I read your blog everyday. I was shocked to hear about the news. It makes you realize how we take our lives for granted. It made me stop and think about you, myself and life in general…
I’ll keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Get well soon. And please take care of yourself.
-Chandan

Get well soon, Om!
Re your hope that your readers will take care of our health too – I posted an entry about your new year’s resolutions at my blog.
Thanks for sharing your story.
Get better and better sooner….
Same holiday blues we had, Om!
Getting no love from work with threatened axe this month, spent all our savings because of our daughter’s condition, and whatever little we had again went as payment for hospital bills. Been like that for the third straight year of a lifetime of treatment and possible emergencies that takes not just money but more so energy and time.
Know what? Even though I do get deflated, just knowing that everything’s for my lil imp of a daughter, i’m comfortable with what I have. And I will just keep on going. Our lives aren’t hopeless, just a bit different. That’ fine by me.
Enjoy the forced RnR, Om! Stay focused on what’s present for now.
OM,
Get well soon.Try some light “Breathing Exercise” – Yoga , to keep away from the stick&bottle!!!

Wow. No scotch for 2008. Bummer.

Take care of that heart. You’ll get used to the new lifestyle…and your body will thank you.
Best,

Dear Om,
Please take care of yourself…
On a lighter note: You were all over the Indian media, specially for your health conditions, there were stories about blogging, social media being very stressful. I am a aspiring social media catalyst, the day this news was published i had to pretend to sleep early because, my parents were worried about my health and now one of friends have also created a diet plan for me…
Om: Here’s to a speedy recovery and a life well lived (even with decaf coffee). We look forward to your return and the daily blog.
It’s wonderful that you’re on the road to a full recovery. Glad you’re going to be ok. But please listen to your doctor. We want you around for a long time. 🙂
Take it easy, don’t rush. We’ll all be here when you get back. Your health is more important to us and it’s our number one priority.
Get well soon Om.
Hi OP,
Heard from D what you went through and felt pretty sad. Another friend of mine (in the stock market), of your age went through the same agony in December. I hope you finally wake up now & take giving up smoking & drinking seriously..As you also know, no health, no blogging. Pls. spare your mom of the experience of seeing you in pain. On a positive note, you got some good coverage in the Indian press of your blog.
Good luck and have a healthy 2008 and see you soon in Mumbai.
Pankaj
Om, take care of yourself. We like you too much for you not to.
Om, best wishes. I’m a regular viewer of GigaOM (and all the other Revision3 shows!) and really enjoy the show. Now you know this is all because you never let Joyce introduce herself, don’t you? hehe. Seriously though, I hope you have a quick recovery and enjoy the new diet the doctors recommend for you. I’m trying to start out the new year a little healthier myself. It’s tough maintaining a healhty living when you’re sitting at a keyboard all day, but this event just shows the importance of a healthy lifestyle. Best wishes.
OM, as in O’My God! Shock and my best, best wishes are sent your way. Let me join the hoards who wish you well. Ah, the mechanics of living. You have the writing down, but what must you master now? Yoga? Big hug for next time I see you, xoVivian
Best wishes for a full and speedy recovery, Om.
just heard about your heart attack. Love the show and I look forward to you coming back. Stay good.
Best wishes from a reader in Brazil. First, adopt healthier habits and come back to writing ! I’m waiting to see you in Revision3’s The GigaOM Show.
Om – I am sorry to hear about your heart attack. Wishing you a speedy recovery!
Get well soon, Om. And do take special care of that heart. This community needs your sound advice and guidance. However, I hope you will take a break once in a while to stop and smell those roses!
My dad’s last cigarette was to see if it could help him get rid of that strange pain in his arm and chest. His heart is all well now 15 years later. Best wishes for a continued recovery.
Dear Om,
Shiva from Chennai, India. You are THE influential writer who has inspired me to start connecting. I have been following your writings everywhere since a year. I pray that you recover first to 100%. Writing should be later when its ok, I am sure when you do return to writing, there will be a different and enjoyable touch to your writing which you will observe then.
Hi Om,
I’m a huge fan and appreciate all you’ve done to deliver breaking news to keep me up to speed on the happenings in the Valley and beyond.
Best wishes on a speedy recovery. I expect that your doctors have already put you on an exercise program and nutrition guidelines, but if you need any non-stress exercise or nutrition tips let me know!
Thanks,
Jaafer
I wish you healing Om. I promise the Internet will keep running while you’re resting.
Put it down now Om. Put the iPhone down and just repeat your name over and over.

Hey Om:
Glad to know you are feeling better. Looking forward to seeing an A+ report card from your doctor by February!
Best,
Anil Advani
Om — I know I’m late to the party with ‘get well wishes’, but I wanted to give you a chance to dig out! Really, I’m so happy that everything worked out well for you, and I wish you good fortune with your healthier lifestyle — definitely won’t be easy, but you’ve got so many friends & well-wishers… they won’t let you slip! 🙂
Dave
Om, sorry to hear the news and delighted to hear you are OK.
Here’s to a speedy recovery and healthy 2008 and beyond.
Best,
Ryan
I am so glad to hear that you are well now. When I was in NY for a shot while few months back, almost the time you had launched the Giga OM show I never missed any episode on iTunes and I recall one viewer had once funnily remarked that you should shed few kilos. I hope you take that comment seriously now. Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

Get well soon Om!
My husband had a heart attack on 1/8/2008, in Massachussets while traveling on business. He is doing well now. I have written a blog detailing and chronicalling that experience. The blog is at: http://www.qtmonster.com/attack
Wishing you a speedy recovery. I appreciate your experience as I had cardiac arrest 4 years ago. While riding my bicycle, I collapsed at the top of a hill. Breathing stopped, heart stopped, I was unconscious. Lucky for me a nurse happened by and called 911 and gave me CPR. In this case that is the only reason I am still here. I was in a coma for 17 hours, then underwent quadruple-bypass surgery, and took several weeks to get any strength back. I completely forgot everything that happened two full weeks prior to the incident (opposite of Bourne?), and do not remember the bike ride. This may be too much information, but it is just to show that recovery is possible. Best wishes, Steve (P.S. Enjoy your show GigaOM, as well as Cranky Geeks appearances.
Get well soon Om.
I guess it is time to say goodbye to cigars etc.
My calling came in 2004 and since then I have lost approx. 50 pounds, and now weight a healthy 160.
Vic.
PS: It is OK to a slim avatar. 🙂
Om,
Glad to hear you are recovering. All the best!!
Palo S, NYC
Good to hear that you’re getting better! Changes are tough to make. Sounds like you’ve got a good support network 😉
I was shocked to hear about you heart attack (just found out recently) but glad to know that you are back in the game. All the wishes and hopes for your continued recovery and healthier lifestyle!
Hey Om:
Not sure if you remember me from San Francisco.
Sorry to hear that you haven’t been well. I’m confident you’ll take the steps necessary to get back on your feet in no time. I may have some news to share with you in a couple of months, but will not excite you now since it’s premature.
Aparna
Feel better OM!
It seems a bit late to add to this topic but, I only know of Om through my listening to the Cranky geeks podcasts with John dvorak.
I have been listening to the achived shows after just discovering them and I have found Om to be hilariously funny!
so the more recent story about bloging being a halth risk, where John mentions Om having a heart attack on his show…scared me. I didn’t know anything of this!
I just wanted to let you know that I am so happy to discover that you are now OK.
May you have many years of bringing people your excellent sense of perception on the world..which I have discovered I love reading your blog too now. you have a great sense of humour and see things in a way that is well, just interesting and down to earth.
I wish you good health Om!
Om is a cool guy. Hope you get well, and get things on track.
Heart attacks are very scary things.
I hope you are doing well.
I just ran across this and some time has gone by. Hopefully you have fully recovered and are living life to its fullest.
