Mike Arrington is slowly expanding his empire. He launched CrunchBoard, a job board fine tuned for his community of reader. My congratulations to Mike on making the move, and putting together a good resource for his readers. He explains his reasons here.
CrunchBoard, 37Signals and PaidContent – they are all bringing attention to the fact that narrow niche sites work, and the job boards don’t seem to have the necessary impact or perhaps get the right kind of users. These three sites have very strong communities, and as a result their job boards work and will continue to work. These three boards should enjoy success, because the number of technology job listings in on an upswing. Indeed.com reports that there are 121 job listings per 1000 people in San Jose, and 74 job listings per 1000 in San Francisco.
As we have previously noted, the online jobs segment is attracting a lot of entrepreneurial attention, and of course venture capital. makeover of sorts. From vertical search plays such as Indeed, to new players such as TheLadders, and Jobster are trying to address some of the inefficiencies of the current online job model.
Many recruiters have privately expressed their dissatisfaction with some of the older models. TheLadders’ for instance is a model which works even though job seekers pay to find their dream jobs. TheLadders’ founder Marc Cenedella, who was in town recently shared with me some eye-popping data, all for a cup of coffee. That merits a post in itself, but not today!
Wonderful insights, Om. The day is rapidly approaching when all job announcements will be instantly searchable, regardless of whether they are posted on a job board or an employer’s website. Job-seekers will be able to read almost every employer’s recruitment history and get impartial, third-party reviews of what it’s really like to work there. Aggregator sites will give way to structured databases that use math and statistics to help job-seekers predict where their next opportunity is likely to be found. Transaction-based advertising for individual jobs becomes a thing of the past as employers shift marketing dollars into improving their employer brands. Online recruitment is a fascinating microcosm of the larger Internet and the forces that are changing how we think about information and communications. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out.

ROTFL, Tony. Grow up!
Anon, c’mon tough guy show yourself before you belittle someone elses comments! At least Tony is trying to provide productive comments to this post.
I couldn’t see anything wrong about Tony’s point of view. If you have objections Anon, or you do believe that it doesn’t make sense, why don’t you spread your opinion in detail?
HI Om,
We have been running a job board in India covering weekend walk-ins, fresher jobs, jobs for experienced professionals.
We do have a “Startup jobs” section in which any startup company can post job on their own.
And all this we are doing FREE! 🙂 This job board has been working really cool for Indian job sector.
Great post and spot on regarding the growing value and opportunity niche sites have in online recruitment. Right now online recruitment is a $2b pie with 70% going to Monster, CareerBuilder, Yahoo HotJobs. But it is 100% true that recruiters and companies are not happy with the results from these sites.
Recruiters and companies are actively trying to reach high quality, passive candidates on the sites where they live (such as yours). As a plug for those blogs, sites, organizations that would like to launch a job board (but don’t have and/or don’t want to spend the time, resources, dollars to build their own), please take a look at JobThread Groups (http://www.JobThread.com) or feel free to contact me directly (eric at jobthread dot com).
Here are some recent sites that have launched using JobThread Groups:
http://jobs.techgigger.com
http://jobs.treehugge.com
http://nextny.jobthread.com
I think we’ll be seeing a rush of sites and new niche job boards.

Hi everebody
My computer was infected with a trojan virus today, from a link from someone on msn messenger. I ran AVG Free and the virus went to the vault, which i have deleted and all seems to be running fine now. however, i’ve had to vault it three times. when I restart, the virus seems to reappear. but my computer is running fine.
but…
there is an icon on my desktop titled winstall.exe which when scanned doesn’t contain a virus, but I have just had a quick scan thru some stuff on the internet and get the idea that its a nasty little program that lets other nasty stuff infect my computer I can’t delete it, and in fact, am not sure if this is accurate and am a little worried its an important windows file i shouldnt be deleting at all.
I’ve now installed Avira Antivir as well, as a double up safety precaution, but no spyware detection programs as yet (I’m not even sure if I’m wording that correctly..)
help??
Thanks a lot
