I am at the Search SIG down in Mountain View listening to the founders of some of the new vertical search engines including Healthline, Simply Hired, Trulia and Truveo. There were nearly 20% people in the room who were building search engines. When I asked these panelists whose search engines are basically are scraping other sites, cannibalizing the folks that provide the “content” for their sites, what was their exit strategy? Answer – dead silence. I was saying this earlier in the day, on this Web 2.0 highway, there are three exits: Microsoft, Yahoo and Google. And that simply sums up the single biggest problem with Web 2.0. Niall says Google mentioned every five minutes!
could not agree more!
the silicon valley economy should not revolve around a great google hope, no more than the seattle economy should not revolve around a great msgt hope. build long lasting sustainable businesses or web 2.0 will be the biggest joke since, well sock puppets.
aw c’mon Om… not quite fair, since the panel did address a similar question earlier in the session…
when asked about acquisition vs IPO about 15 minutes prior, the panelists responded with various takes on what the possible prospects were, and they also indicated that it was still fairly early and they were still exploring monetization via advertising, lead generation, and other potential areas as they matured.
i think perhaps the silence was more due to there not being any definite answers to exit, more than any specific expectations of a flip to Google (or Yahoo or Microsoft).
while i’d agree those are 3 very likely candidates with acquisition agendas (as are other lesser lights EBAY, AMZN, IACI, AOL), they’re not the only game in town.
all 4 of the companies represented tonight focused on multi-billion dollar markets (employment, real estate, healthcare, television/video), all of have significant %’s of spending moving online.
certainly each of those markets can support multiple independent businesses at substantial valuations, regardless of what G/Y/M decide they want to do.
—
sure, while the Empire spreads its wings across most of the known landscape, it’s easy for folks to suggest that all roads lead to Rome — but the shipping lanes of the New World weren’t dominated by Romans.
there were empires before Google, and there will be empires after Google. regardless, there will always be roads less traveled that lead to rich and plentiful lands, unknown to today’s centurions.
hail caesar? ahh…. screw that shit.
set course for first star to the left, and straight on til morning.

Hey Om –
Wow, can’t buy a link on your blog, even in a round-up! 😉
Actually, I think the official reason you got a silent response was because JohnB had just asked the question a moment before.
Great seeing you again; will you be at the TechCrunch BBQ next Friday?
tony
Looking at the web stats from my little site, I can see your point about being “cannabilized”. Maybe its time for the free lunch to end and for me to start doing some major kung-fu on my robots.txt file. How much is access to individual web sites worth to these new search engines?
tony… honest mistake. fixed. also lets catch up in the city. it should be fun
dave, what was said earlier was a mealy mouthed politically correct statement. that’s all. it was not an answer. hence me asking the question…. again!
Om-
GYME is a better sounding acronym. Eh tu Dave? ‘Lesser light’ heh. You’d think with the Skype acquisition eBay would be a big blazing pulsar of an acquirer.
hey ro: EBAY likely an acquirer in more focused areas; however i’d agree with Om that acquisition aspirations for Yahoo / Google / Microsoft are likely all across the board.
at least to date, EBAY hasn’t staked its claim as a broad-based portal destination / search company. (altho i certainly agree with you that it could be — and i tried to make a strong case for moving in that direction while i was there… i would imagine that’s part of the reason why Louis Monier left to join Google).
eBay does seem to be making more aggressive moves these days with Skype deal & Kijiji & Verisign acquisition, but i’d say they are still more narrowly focused on shopping & payments than on a broader search portal / destination strategy that G, Y, & M are all aiming for.
anyway: it’s not a bad strategy, just a more specific one.
isn’t the vertical search result – because of its derivative nature – much more difficult to monetise than a classified database query, esp in a cpa world? and won’t that factor reduce exit opportunities, esp in big-ticket-item categories?
imho monetisation of the fixed-format structure of classifieds will be much easier than the non-format derivative listing in search engines. trulia tends to take its content straight from the local press websites, which often take it straight from the local MLS. isn’t realtor.com a much more focused and traceable destination for cpa dollars?
>isn’t the vertical search result – because of its derivative nature – much more difficult to monetise than a classified database query, esp in a cpa world?
That makes no sense. If a vertical search engine is targeted at say realtors or engineers, then the cpc bidding should only be higher since ad buyers know more about the type of lead they’re getting…
chad is correct.
travel search & shopping search have already demonstrated successful arbitrage thru buying traffic from Google & Yahoo, increasing customer value through vertical development, and generating leads at higher roi.
vertical search engines by definition identify more narrow, specific, detailed user profiles & specific needs (house, job, vacation, retail purchase), and thus typically generate a higher value customer than from a generic search engine.
all search (generic or vertical) is ‘derivative’, in that search engines index data from multiple external sources. the ability to monetize traffic is based more on breadth of audience, depth of user profile & user engagement, compelling & comprehensive data, and ultimately on the value of transactions generated from relevant search results & vertical applications.

Om:
I think you’re being awfully presumptuous here.
First there are a lot more companies than the three you mentioned (IAC, Fox, AOL…the list goes on) who are looking at companies here..
More importantly, you could have made the same derisive remark about craigslist, juniper or yahoo at one point or another in their existence — and yet they all remain independent.
Finally, what kind of fool would have given you the answer you stated above? I mean, jeez, what was that, some kind of litmus test for stupid executives? Even (especially) if any of these guys were doing that, they’d say something else.
If the search business has taught us anything, it’s that things aren’t as sewn up as conventional wisdom might have you think…
-CST
chris, let me answer your questions here. the companies you are mentioning are looking to buy companies that have little or nothing to do with the se start-ups. all you have to do is read their recent statements.
secondly, there is a clear difference between these start-ups and craigslist, juniper and yahoo. those were companies that had their own defenisble IP, a new way of doing things and clear cut strategy.
derisive…. it was a simple question: what’s the exit. it is the first thing one has to think of when building a “capitalistic” for profit enterprise. that’s the whole point.
presumptous? no i asked a question, that needed to be asked.
Om:
Ask Jeeves, MySpace, Livejournal were all acquired recently by folks not google, yahoo, or microsoft (and I’d point out that Topix.net with a news search play received a nice chunk of investment from the newspaper industry). SimplyHired — clearly interesting to anyone looking at a classified play. Truveo (video search)? IAC, Fox, Sony etc… Healthline could be interesting to a variety of non search folks. Trulia..again, smells like classifieds.
Also, seems like you’re according a lot more strategy-in-hindsight here… Yahoo went through several pretty major gyrations in strategy along the way to being what it is today (which is why there was an opportunity for five guys to build dmoz.org in 1998) and you tell me what the “exit” is for craigslist. I’m sure some of the newspaper folks would be dying to find out :-).
I think Gautham covered it pretty well — Keeping your options open is the best strategy.
Mind you, I always like your refreshing candor in public (especially when I’m not on the hot seat)…but I don’t think it’s quite so simple as that.
How about this — I bet you $1 (and a public “I was wrong” by the loser) that one of these guys is acquired by someone *other* than Microsoft, Yahoo or Google. If they go public, it goes to me. If they disappear, it’s a wash, and if they’re acquired by someone, who *then* is acquired by Microsoft, Yahoo or Google within a year (a la Coolboard and Onelist) you win. What do you think?
-CST
chris, well i take your bet and will see what happens. one caveat – healthline which can go WebMD, or one of the medical sites. Apart from that I think it is going to be an interesting next 12 months.
actually i would love to raise stakes to $2 and a beer, if you tell us who are the likely buyers of these players. chris, that should be a fair one 😉
and if we get bought or go IPO, i’ll pick up the tabs for the beers 😉
I think Warren Buffett’s old analogy of “Mr. Market” holds true here. From time to time, Mr. Market will come to you and offer to buy your business. Sometimes he will be optimistic and offer you a lot of money. Sometimes he will be pessimistic and offer you very little.
You are never obligated to sell to him. If you like your business, and you don’t like his offer, you should keep running it until you get a price that you do like.
Now, that being said, I agree with Om that lots of folks are now starting companies under the theory that GYM (and I’d add another M for Murdoch) will buy them out. But even if they’re not happy with what Mr. Market ends up offering them, I’m still happy that people are creating great new services for me to use!
Well, the point of my earlier bet was that I don’t think we’re at a place where all the buyers have identified themselves, nor do I think it’s impossible for one of these guys to break free and be a stand alone entity (although, it’s always hardto do that). So — I’m not going for the $2 upgrade to prognostidigitator extraordinaire, and merely going to bank on (my bet) that there guys will not nerely be meat for GYM (as you put it)…
So…for the record..$1, and I’ll even allow the exception of Healthline here.
Get out the popcorn. Maybe Dave will allow us to do the cage match at the next SearchSIG.
-CST
I love this site, and I am a fan of Web 2.0. People usually mention the big 3: Google, Yahoo and Microsoft, when they talk about web 2.0. Any listed smallcap name that can be considered as a play on Web 2.0? Maybe a company that the big 3 will be interested in acquiring?
Chris (Tolles) is correct: if you want to reflect the reality of the market, you need to add eBay, Amazon, NewsCorp, IAC and AOL. And then some.
Also, I would say that in the current market, M&A is by far the prevalent exit route for venture-backed companies – however mature they are (or not). So yes, the exit for most of these companies will be an acquisition – the question is more: how soon/early.
Good to have you with us at the SIG :-).
Om, you are right on here. The acquirers may be GYM or the others mentioned here, which is really not the most critical point.
The more interesting one is that so many vertical search plays are getting VC-funded when it is fairly clear that there do not have anything but acquistion as an exit strategy.
Its tough to imagine SimplyHired (for example) go public – huge downside is the sites they scrape stop allowing them to do so (like Craigslist did to Oodle), they are done. Metadata is of no value when the basic foundation is so fragile. And GYM can “easily” come up with this metadata, just like so many competitors have already done. (No offense, Dave!)
Something like a Healthline is way more attractive – mainly because you can search for health information on Google and get decent results and Google most likely will not pursue to make it super-targeted due to other larger goals. In such a case, plays like Healthline can survive very well. Acquisition or IPO is still an open question.
Also like one of the comments above, if a a job vertical search site makes money by using a job portals content without delivering as much revenue to the job portal, then its a no-brainer for hte job portal to shut them off. Content, in such cases, is still the key.
Next 12 months, as you say, will be interesting!
