VDSL, is going to become the buzzword in next six to 12 months. You can already find indications of that. SBC is telling folks at Light Reading that it is getting ready to roll out video over DSL to 18 million homes offering them between 25-30 megabits per second connections. I guess its fiber to the curb, and then VDSL? (Wait, someone did not believe my previous post that much bandwidth is really going to be available so soon) Swisscom has just selected Alcatel as its VDSL supplier. Elsewhere, ITU has adopted standards that would allow 100 megabits per second symmetric VDSL services. VDSL is key for the proliferation of IPTV, a trend everyone from Bells to Microsoft have hitched their wagon with. According to this report, the total number of IPTV Subscribers is going to increase from 1.9 million in 2004, to 25.3 million in 2008. The report also forecasts IP TV subscriber revenue growth from $635 million in 2004 to $7.2 billion in 2008, also broken down on regional and service-provider levels.
